University Open Days are great opportunities for prospective students and their parents to explore its campus and facilities, and find out what it is like to study at the university. At the International Medical University (IMU), Open Days are annual events with many scheduled talks during the day. Many of these talks would see members of the alumni sharing their experiences studying at IMU and on the career of their choice. For the Open Day on 25 August 2019, a total of 12 talks were scheduled and nine of them had 12 alumni as co-speakers. This was the third IMU Open Day which had members of the alumni as co-speakers of the scheduled talks.
Talk on ‘Diverse Career Pathways with a Degree in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry’ |
One of the morning slot talks was the talk by A/Prof Mohd Zulkefeli Mat Jusoh on ‘Diverse Career Pathways with a Degree in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry’. His co-speaker for this talk was Lau Kar Chang, from cohort BP1/13. |
Talk on ‘So, You Want to be a Doctor’ |
Prof Dato’ Dr Sivalingam Nalliah, gave the talk with co-speakers, Dr Liyafizzira, Dr Chun Yiing, Dr Juan Lee and Dr Alexander Soo. For Dr Liyafizzira Zakaria and Dr Ang Chun Yiing, it was a great honor for them to come back to International Medical University (IMU) as the co-speakers for Prof Dato’ Dr Sivalingam Nalliah’s slot while Dr Liyafizzira and Dr Chun Yiing, who are currently in their housemanship training, took this opportunity to reunite with their favorite lecturer, Prof Dato’ Dr Sivalingam. After the Q&A session with the parents and students, the alumni took the opportunity to spend some time with Prof Dato’ Dr Sivalingam and share their current housemanship experience. |
Talk on ‘A Career in Dentistry’ |
Prof Allan Pau’s talk on ‘A Career in Dentistry’ was joined by two alumni from cohort DT1/14, Dr Eunice Looi Shyn, and Dr Lim V Ren. Both of the alumni were happy to answer the parents’ questions regarding the career pathway in dentistry. |
Talk on ‘Food in Medicine – The Role of Nutrition and Dietetics’ |
Dr Lee Ching Li, a lecturer in the Division of Nutrition and Dietetics was very proud to have two Nutrition & Dietetics alumni with her on that day. Samantha Wong Soon Yee from cohort DN1/12 accompanied by Philip Lee (DN1/13), expressed their happiness to share their stories and experiences. Samantha, who is currently doing her research under the School of Postgraduate Studies was able to compare and share her experience from both perspectives. “I’m a proud lecturer,” commented Dr Ching Li. |
Talk on ‘What is Medical Biotechnology and Why is it Important in the 21st Century?’ |
Prof Chin Beek Yoke’s talk was a little different from the other talks as current students and alumni were present as co-speakers. This provided a powerful insight for the parents to hear from current students and alumni sharing their views. The alumna from the cohort MB 1/13, Crystal Tham Ann Chi was invited to join this session by Prof Chin herself and Crystal did not even think twice. |
Talk on ‘Careers as a Psychologist’ |
2018 graduate, Shamir Das Kavidas was happy to reunite with his favourite lecturer, Dr Shamala Ramasamy during the talk on ‘Careers as a Psychologist’. |
Talk on ‘A Career in Chiropractic’ |
The talk by Prof Michael Thomas Haneline, Director of the Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CCAM) was accompanied by Dr Tay Pei Shen. According to Dr Tay Pei Shen, “It was a great experience to be able to see how Professor Haneline disseminate his knowledge about chiropractic to the parents and our prospective students. Open Day talks provides an opportunity for them to have a better understanding about the programme, and I believe, as alumni, we are able to provide them some insights about the life as a chiropractic student in IMU”. |

Nursing alumna, Wong Chek Zhi was another one of our alumni who returned to the Bukiy Jalil campus to share her experiences. She was the co-speaker at a talk by Dr Lim Swee Geok.
