15 May 2014 marked a very important date to Nutrition and Dietetics programme in the country. For the first time in almost 30 years of the dietetic establishment, a National Level Train the Trainers Workshop for the academicians, clinical instructors and preceptors was organised. The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics (N&D), International Medical University (IMU) was very proud and honoured to be given the mandate to organise this very first workshop. The workshop was organised in collaboration with six public universities with dietetics programme; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). The workshop would not have been a success without the support given by the Malaysian Dietitians Association (MDA).
The main aim of the workshop is to enhance the trainers’ competency in training dietetics students. The programme started with the opening remarks by Prof Winnie Chee Siew Swee, the President of MDA, followed by Tuan Hj Ridzoni Sulaiman, the head of profession in the Ministry of Health (MOH).
80 trainers from all over Malaysia attended the workshop. Interesting and stimulating topics were lined up for the trainers. The workshop hit its climax during the best practice sharing forum with the two Heads of Department from Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar Seremban (HTJS) and Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM). Similar excitement and enthusiasm was seen during a talk on ‘Understanding the millennial and how to facilitate their learning’. Other exciting topics covered during the workshop were ‘Teaching clinical reasoning’ and ‘Giving feedback on students’ performance’. Everyone present that day enjoyed the discussion and sharing session very much.
