Malaysian Brain Bee Challenge (MBBC), is a neuroscience competition for secondary students organised every year to improve awareness about the brain and its parts, development, different functions, stress and neurodegenerative disorders. Each year, IMU‘s School of Medicine in collaboration with its Marketing Department and Medical Museum organised a workshop on 7 December 2019, for Form 4 students of schools under IMU Zone of the Malaysian Brain Bee Challenge. This year, the national level challenge will be held on 16 January 2020. 40 students from different schools participated in the workshop. Prior to the workshop, the e-resources prepared by the Human Biology Division lecturers were sent to the schools.
Prof Dato’ Maimunah, Associate Dean, School of Medicine, inaugurated the workshop. At the workshop, lecturers from Human Biology Division (A/Prof Farida, A/Prof Nilesh, Dr Htar Htar, Dr Khin Ma Ma, Dr Brinnell, Dr Mangala, Dr Irfan, Dr Huma) discussed on the development, gross anatomy, mechanisms of human movement, neurophysiology of receptors, neurotransmitters, sensations, sleep, language, memory, vision and hearing. The morning session also saw Semester 5 medical students of School of Medicine, demonstrated parts of the brain to the participants. In the afternoon session of the workshop, students were introduced to the mechanism of stress and common neurodegenerative disorders.
Feedback on the workshop showed that the students enjoyed the learning about the neuroscience particularly the Q & A session which was held in a competitive environment to motivate the students.
