26 Feb 2014 – A total of 46 pharmacists attended a talk entitled ‘Management of Gout: Updates on Pharmacotherapy’ at the Senate Room in International Medical University (IMU)‘s Bukit Jalil Campus. The talk is a joint effort of the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society-Young Pharmacist Chapter (MPS-YPC) and IMU Alumni. Mr Gan Pou Wee, one of the IMU-University of Strathclyde Master of Pharmacy graduates, was the honorary speaker for this talk. Beside being a fully registered pharmacist in Malaysia, Mr Gan is also the first Malaysian who was awarded the Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). Mr Gan is also the Founder and Webmaster of the Malaysian Group of Pharmacy Specialists. His clinical expertise is in coronary care and general medicine pharmacotherapy.
In this talk, Mr. Gan stressed on the management of acute attack of gouty arthritis. He commented that the importance of role of pharmacists in providing evidence based pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments to patients. An interactive session, engaged with the aid of Mentimeter, was in the form of a live online poll to seek point of view from the participants regarding the management of gout. The participants actively submitted their answers using the smart gadgets when five clinical case studies were projected on the screen. Before the talk ended, a few participants took the opportunity to clear their doubts during the Questions and Answers session.
