Insights from a Malaysian Delegate: An IMU Medical Student’s Perspective on IFMSA Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting 2024

02 Oct 2024

APRM 2024 was an Amazing, Perspective-shifting, Rewarding and Memorable experience.

I vividly recall the excitement of arriving in Bangkok with the other Malaysian delegates on the first day of International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) 2024. Warmly greeted by a member of the organising committee, M, who spoke fluent Mandarin, we were transported to the hotel to prepare for the opening ceremony at Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park.

Once registered and changed, we proceeded to the event venue where we were greeted with a delectable spread of food. The lively evening commenced with an energetic roll call, speeches and a captivating Thai traditional dance.

We had the opportunity to mingle with delegates from across the Asia-Pacific region while enjoying the palatable meal. Moreover, it was truly interesting to learn basic Thai from M, who had been patiently teaching us since our arrival in this vibrant country.

The following day began with a Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME) session where delegates from various countries engaged in discussions on transformative leadership in healthcare, educational strategies, and learning methodologies. As usual, we established ground rules prior to commencing the session, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all delegates. Everyone had the opportunity to express their views and share their insights throughout the engaging session.

In the afternoon, we had a joint session of the Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) and the Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH), where we delved into Public Health Exchanges (PHEx) and the Global Action Project (GAP). It was incredibly enlightening to hear medical students from other countries share their diverse exchange initiatives.

To wrap up the evening, a fruitful panel discussion on ‘The Future of Healthcare Systems in the Asia-Pacific Region’ was held, featuring renowned professors from Thailand. The night then concluded with an interactive lesson on Muay Thai.

Following a nourishing breakfast on the second day, the SCOME session commenced with discussions on curriculum development and planning, strategies to bridge the gap between medical students and health administrators, and the significance of cultivating socially accountable physicians.

After lunch, the Activities Fair, a renowned event within the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), took place. During the fair, delegates presented posters, brochures, and other promotional materials to showcase the community impact of their activities. The event aimed to inspire other IFMSA members, gather feedback, solicit suggestions for improvement, and foster new collaborative opportunities.

Following the Activities Fair, the Exchanges Fair took place, with our country actively participating. The Exchanges Fair serves as a platform for each country to promote their exchange programs and enhance standards in Academic Quality and Social Programs. We showcased our exchange efforts in Malaysia while also promoting our diverse culture through traditional games and informative brochures. It was a truly unique experience.

As I explored the various booths, I felt as if I was transported to different countries, immersing myself in their cultures simply by listening to their stories and indulging in local delicacies and souvenirs. The evening was undoubtedly unforgettable, filled with captivating performances from diverse countries.

The National Food and Drinks Party (NFDP) that followed was the highlight of the meeting, with everyone dressed in their traditional attires and contributing their local delicacies as well as beverages to the festive atmosphere.

I was overwhelmed by the variety of delightful souvenirs and snacks, deeply appreciating the rich cultural diversity of the Asia-Pacific region.

On the third day, we delved into mental health discussion with a yoga and meditation session by a picturesque pool, enjoying the breath-taking view of Bangkok during the SCOME sessions. Subsequently, I participated in the Regional Priority Sessions, joining a session on ‘Vulnerable Populations and Their Rights’ where we addressed pressing concerns regarding refugees in our countries. We then attended the Plenary session to discuss proposed bylaw changes. I was fortunate to be part of the plenary and cast votes on matters pertaining to the Asia Pacific Region.

For the closing ceremony, we were transported to Icon Siam, where we embarked on a delightful cruise along the Chao Phraya River. While enjoying a sumptuous buffet, everyone made the most of the remaining moments, capturing photographs and bidding farewells.

On the final day, after a satisfying breakfast and a round of goodbyes, I departed for the airport, carrying cherished memories of my time at APRM. Reflecting on this incredibly enriching experience, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to go beyond the walls of classrooms and engage in capacity-building sessions, academic-based activities, and cultural exchange. I felt genuinely welcomed and at home during my time in Bangkok.

What truly humbled me was IFMSA’s ability to bring together so many like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds, where cultural and knowledge exchange is at the heart of the organization. The dedication and attention these medical students demonstrate towards crucial global issues shattered the misconception that medical students are solely focused on their studies.

Moreover, I was amazed by how friendships can transcend borders. Despite our diverse cultures, beliefs, and values, we are united under the umbrella of the Asia-Pacific family, reinforcing the importance of regional cooperation and the potential for impactful initiatives through our shared knowledge and collaboration.

Participating in APRM has significantly changed my perspectives in many ways. From the comprehensively crafted sessions to the exhilarating river cruise and the invigorating Muay Thai lesson, my semester break was definitely well-spent. Still captivated by the warmth of the Thai people and the inspiring individuals I met, I must say APRM is truly a one-of-a-kind meeting that is beyond my wildest dreams.
