On 27 July, 2024, the Department of Social Sciences at IMU University organised the Lokakarya Bahasa Melayu Workshop, aimed at enhancing students’ proficiency in the Malay language, specifically for communication in clinical and healthcare settings. Held in the University’s Hybrid Room (2.07.02), the workshop ran from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm, offering an immersive learning experience for the participants.
The workshop, tailored to strengthen students’ basic understanding of Bahasa Melayu within the healthcare field, covered essential topics including:
Basics of Malay Language
-Vocabulary (Healthcare & Local Dialects)
-Grammar & Sentences (Common Phrases, Intonation)
Comprehension & Writing
-Reading Health Sciences Articles
-Summarizing Medical Texts
Speaking & Listening
-Clarity and Accuracy of Information
-Overcoming Language Barriers (Dialect Differences)
-Addressing client’s concerns
-Role-playing Challenging Healthcare Scenarios
Participants were engaged in interactive role-playing exercises, simulating real-life conversations they might encounter during clinical placements. These activities were designed to help students not only build confidence but also master the language nuances necessary for effective communication in a healthcare environment.
Through these exercises, students improved their vocabulary, learned the significance of appropriate salutations, and practiced addressing patient concerns, especially in overcoming dialectical differences. This valuable training was instrumental in preparing the students for future placements in Malaysian healthcare settings, particularly in government roles where Bahasa Melayu is essential for patient consultations and clear communication.
The Lokakarya Bahasa Melayu Workshop stands as an impactful initiative, equipping students with the language skills necessary to thrive in professional environments while ensuring accurate and empathetic communication with their future patients.
