The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Asia Pacific (Region XV1) Meeting was held at the Aesculap Academy, Manila from 7-8 December, 2017. One of the highlights of the meeting was the Resident Paper Competition to encourage surgical trainees to pursue research in trauma related subjects. The paper may be research in basic science or clinical science. Surgical trainees in ATLS countries of the Asia Pacific and Australasia participate in this competition. Shortlisted participants make an oral presentation of their work at the ATLS Regional meeting. The winners from the Regional meetings throughout the world then compete in a final competition held during the Annual scientific meeting of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) to be held in San Antonio, Texas, USA in 7-11 March, 2018. For the winners of the Regional meetings, the ACS provides 4 days accommodation, an economy air-ticket, a per diem allowance and a cash prize of USD 500.00 for them to compete in the USA. The winner is also expected to attend the COT banquet. Both first-place papers in the basic science and clinical science categories in the USA will be eligible for publication in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
| This year, the shortlisted participants of the Resident paper competition were from Australia, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. Malaysia is represented by Dr Tee Shi Ting, an IMU graduate. The title of her oral presentation was “The role of general surgeons in the management of traumatic brain injury in the age of specialization.” The co-authors of the paper were Drs Azuddin Mohd Khairy, Mohd Yusof Abdul Wahab and SK Lum. She made an excellent oral presentation, survived the barrage of questions thrown at her and won the first prize. |
The ATLS fraternity of Malaysia and the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia is extremely proud of her achievement and hope that her success will spur Malaysian trainees to achieve great heights in the future.
Malaysia has won the first prize at the ATLS Asia Pacific (Region XV1) Meeting on two consecutive years (2016 and 2017). The ATLS Asia Pacific (Region XV1) winner last year, Dr Sabrina Balakrishnan, won the second prize in Washington DC in March 2017. Dr Sabrina is also a graduate of the IMU. Both Drs Tee and Sabrina has done IMU proud!
