Navigating the Path to Empowerment: My Journey Through the Master of Counselling at IMU

22 Aug 2024

Embarking on the Master of Counselling programme at the IMU University has been a transformative journey, one that has not only enriched my professional skills but also fostered significant personal growth. Balancing the demands of parenting three children, a full-time job, and rigorous academic pursuits has been challenging, yet this journey has become a grounding force during difficult times. Navigating the complexities of balancing family, work, and academic commitments has provided ample opportunities for reflection and self-discovery.

Through moments of exhaustion and overwhelm, I have learned to lean into the resilience cultivated through my studies, drawing strength from the knowledge that I am working towards a meaningful goal. This journey has taught me invaluable lessons in time management, prioritisation, and self-care, fostering a deeper sense of resilience and perseverance within me.

Moreover, engaging with the diverse perspectives and experiences of my peers and lecturers at IMU has broadened my understanding of the human experience, enriching my personal and professional growth. Lecturers at IMU are not only highly knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive and generous. They bring a wealth of real-world experience into the classroom, which has been instrumental in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Their supervision and guidance have been pivotal in my development as a counsellor. They encouraged open discussions, critical thinking, and provided personalised feedback, which significantly enhanced my understanding of complex counselling concepts.

Through shared struggles and triumphs, I have forged meaningful connections and cultivated a supportive community that has been helpful in sustaining me through the ups and downs of this journey.

As I continue to navigate the complexities of life as a parent, professional, and student, I am grateful for the transformative impact that this journey has had on my personal growth and development.

It has instilled in me a deeper sense of resilience, empathy, and self-awareness, equipping me with the tools and insights necessary to navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

What I Am Doing Now

Currently, I am engaged in private counselling for individuals and couples, addressing a spectrum of personal and relational challenges. Moreover, I collaborate closely with corporate HR departments to provide counselling services for employees and business owners. This multifaceted role involves conducting stress management workshops, delivering one-on-one counselling sessions, and designing tailored mental health programmes for different organisations. These diverse experiences have honed my skills across varied settings, enabling me to meet the distinct needs of each client effectively.

Plans For Future

Looking forward, I hope to establish my own counselling practice, with a focus on promoting mental health awareness and preventative care. Concurrently, I aim to foster collaboration with mental health professionals from diverse backgrounds, envisioning the creation of a multidisciplinary mental health center. This collaborative effort will ensure comprehensive care for individuals seeking support and guidance, fostering their overall well-being.

Committed to lifelong learning and professional growth, I prioritise staying abreast of advancements in counseling practices. I am dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care to my clients and community, facilitating positive outcomes and meaningful transformations in their lives.

Advice To Future Students

To prospective students embarking on this journey, I encourage you to approach it with openness, patience, and dedication. Explore diverse skills and techniques, leveraging opportunities like IMU’s elective offerings in Creative Intervention, Grief and Crisis Management, and Family and Couple Therapy. Embrace practical experiences, seek mentorship, and prioritise self-care to prevent burnout. Each interaction is a learning opportunity, and every challenge encountered will refine you as a counsellor.

The practical training I received at IMU was particularly impactful, providing hands-on experience in simulated counselling scenarios. Through practicum and internships, such as my tenure at a prominent private family counselling center, I applied learned theories and techniques with confidence. These experiences equipped me with crisis intervention skills, family therapy techniques, and proficiency in various counselling models, preparing me comprehensively for my current role and future endeavours in the counselling field.

As I conclude this chapter of my journey, I am grateful for the transformative experiences and invaluable insights gained through the Master of Counselling programme at IMU. This journey has not only equipped me with the skills and knowledge to support others but has also deepened my understanding of myself and my own internal family system dynamics, fostering growth and healing on a personal level.
