Navigating through the Infinite Realm of Infectious Diseases

09 Sep 2024

Participating in the Medics Intervarsity Academic Olympiad (MIAO) 2024 on 3 August 2024 is a worthwhile experience. Organised jointly by the AMSA Monash and MUMedS, the event was at Monash University Malaysia, Sunway Campus. This year’s theme, “Embarking on ‘Infectious Investigations’: Unravelling the Path and Impact of Infectious Diseases,” introduced a tough and informative knowledge contest.

IMU was represented by three dedicated teams

Team 1:
Team 2:
Team 3:

Lee Min Ci and Brian Low Zu Kang (both from ME 123)
Wong Joon Hui and Yong Kok Yew (both from ME 123)
Seow Pui Ee and Tang Chi Cheng (both from ME 222)

The students’ hard work paid off as both teams comprising of medical students from ME 123 teams advanced to the final buzzer round in the pre-clinical category, ultimately securing the 4th and 5th positions. Despite the top 3 spots being claimed by Monash University, the achievement of reaching the final round and being among the top 40% of finalists highlighted the dedication and teamwork of the IMU students.

In preparation for the competition, the IMU teams studied diligently throughout the week, covering a wide range of disciplines. These included anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, immunology, population health and clinical skills. Additionally, the competition encompasses various systems such as cardiovascular, haematology, neurology, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, reproductive, hepatobiliary and musculoskeletal.

Their participation not only tested their knowledge and problem-solving skills but also provided valuable insights into the field of infectious diseases.

Participants' Sharing of Their Experience

Min Ci (ME 123):

Could not believe we made it to the finals, given the high caliber of the other participants. I am extremely grateful for my amazing partner, Brian, who encouraged me all through the quiz to attempt to achieve the best. We learned and improved tremendously while preparing for this competition.

Brian (ME 123):

Joining MIAO was a fun experience. Even though we didn’t win, we had the chance to network with many brilliant minds from Monash University. Big thanks to my teammate, Min Ci, who spent countless hours and days preparing for this competition. Can’t wait to join again next year! ∞

Joon Hui (ME 123):

MIAO is the first ever academic competition that I’ve joined and not only did I get to network with medical students from different universities but this competition has pushed me to study beyond the scope of my medical curriculum. Will certainly compete again if given the opportunity!

Kok Yew (ME 123):

Choosing to attend MIAO was honestly an impulsive decision that definitely paid off! It was interesting seeing how an academic medical science competition was held, both in terms of the competition’s format and the types of questions asked. I learned a lot and it was a great experience overall.

Congratulations to the IMU students for their outstanding performance in the MIAO 2024. Their commitment and high level of academic excellence were clearly demonstrated. We wish the very best to all of them in their future endeavours, in which their efforts and dedication will lead them to continued success.
