Last January, third year IMU Nutrition students underwent a ten-week placement at the Ministry of Health’s health clinics. The placement aims to provide opportunity for Nutrition students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in an actual workplace setting. Sharing her experience, IMU Nutrition student Lee Lii Sin said “I enjoyed my health clinic placement, particularly the opportunity to interact and provide dietary advice to anemic pregnant women from all walks of life. Being culturally sensitive is important in order to provide dietary advice that is best suited for different populations. I am happy IMU Nutrition curriculum prepares us well with the module Food Culture and Nutrition. During the placement, my cohort mates and I also had the opportunity to deliver educational talks and cooking demonstration in various settings including schools. We had so much fun developing the educational materials for the school children” “Besides that, we participated in the canteen compliance monitoring programme. We went to schools to check on the food and beverages sold within the school premises to ensure school canteen operators comply to the Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines. From this placement, I further appreciate the eminent roles of a Nutritionist in promoting healthy eating habits in the community”. Seah Sheng Hong, another IMU Nutrition student adds further about his experience during the placement “I was amazed to learn about the various roles of a Community Nutritionist in promoting nutrition and health. Nutritionist play an integral role in a public healthcare team. Working with Medical Officers, nurses and fellow dietitian colleagues not only taught me to appreciate inter-professional collaboration, my nutrition communication skills also improved tremendously!”
Dr Megan Chong Hueh Zan, the placement coordinator emphasises that the IMU Nutrition programme has a robust curriculum to train competent and work ready nutritionist. In addition to health clinics exposure, the students also undergo a sixteen-week placement in various health and food companies in the final semester. She further adds “Several IMU Nutrition students secured employment opportunity during internship itself. The employers were impressed with their performance and was happy to absorb them into their organisations”.
