Shining Bright: Celebrating IMU Alumna Tan Jia Hui’s Inspiring Achievements

23 Jan 2025

I graduated from the International Medical University (IMU) in 2020 with a Bachelor of Nursing Science (Post-Registration) with Honours, amid the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the obstacles, the convocation marked a significant milestone in my journey. The programme, delivered through a well-structured blended learning format, offered a rich, comprehensive experience. This approach seamlessly combined classroom instruction with self-directed learning, fostering critical thinking and personal accountability as we navigated independent assignments and managed our own progress.

Balancing full-time work as a registered nurse in a high-dependency unit (HDU) with my studies was certainly demanding. However, this experience strengthened my resilience, adaptability, and time management skills—qualities that have been invaluable in my career.

My academic journey also ignited a passion for research, beginning with my final project on the nutritional status of elderly individuals in a Bidayuh settlement in Kuching. Under the guidance of my supervisor, Dr Chang Woan Ching, I navigated the process of applying for research approvals and collecting data, which proved to be an eye-opening experience.

I delivered my first oral presentation at the IMURC21 International Undergraduate Medical Research Conference in 2021, where I shared my findings.

This experience further fueled my interest in research, prompting me to pursue a Master’s in Medical Science (Research) at the University of Malaya (UM), focusing on ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and critical care nurses in tertiary hospitals across Sarawak.

My passion for presenting research continues to grow, as I actively participate in major conferences, contributing through both oral and poster presentations.

IMU University played a pivotal role in nurturing my leadership abilities. I took on the role of instructor for Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) at my hospital, training fellow healthcare professionals in essential life-saving techniques.

Recently, I was honored with an invitation to Istana Negara to teach first aid and CPR to the Polis Istana Diraja Negara. These experiences in leading and educating within high-stakes environments have been invaluable, enhancing my skills in team management and effective decision-making.

IMU’s emphasis on evidence-based practice has been foundational to my professional growth.

I apply these principles daily, especially in managing ventilated neurosurgery patients in the Neuro HDU.

My commitment to advancing nursing knowledge has led me to present locally and internationally, where I’ve had the privilege of sharing my expertise in critical care, particularly in the nursing management of neurosurgical patients across diverse diagnoses.

I was recently offered a position as a nursing tutor at a Ministry of Health college, a role that enables me to further develop the knowledge and passion for evidence-based practice that IMU fostered in me. I am committed to instilling this same enthusiasm in my students, guiding them to acquire the skills essential for today’s dynamic healthcare landscape.

For me, learning is a lifelong journey, and I am dedicated to continually expanding my expertise to stay aligned with advancements in nursing. Ultimately, we all share a common goal: to shape compassionate, competent, and empathetic nurses who are prepared to serve their communities and contribute to a brighter future in healthcare.
