The IMU Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The programme has produced graduates who are working in a broad range of career fields in various industries including research and development as well as academia. In conjunction with the 10th anniversary celebrations, the School of Pharmacy organised two chemistry competitions for secondary school and pre-university students on 14 July 2018, with the main aim of nurturing interest towards chemistry in the younger generation. A total of 100 over students from various schools participated in these competitions.
The Atom Model Building competition was planned for secondary school students and the Poster Competition was for pre-university students. The competitions encouraged students to explore the different elements of the periodic table, and to showcase the knowledge of those elements artistically in the form of a model or poster.
In the Atom Model Building competition, the teams comprising of 2 students each, were asked to build an atom model of any element of their interest. Participants were highly encouraged to be creative in using recyclable materials for building the atom models. For the Poster competition, the participants were asked to use any type of art medium to prepare a poster explaining the history, properties and significance of any element of their choice. Both competitions were evaluated based on creativity, resourcefulness and presentation skills by judges who are IMU Pharmaceutical Chemistry faculty and school teachers. Apart from the Atom Model Building and Poster Competitions, the students and accompanying teachers also participated in various other activities throughout the campus organised in conjunction with the University’s Science Discovery Challenge 2018. One such activity is the molecular building game where the students learn about the geometry of molecules by building ball and stick model of molecules using molecular building sets. The participating students and teachers had a positive experience, and were appreciative of the many activities organised in IMU on that day which they could participate in. ‘The Atomic Competition gives my students a very good chance to present their products in a big event. This event also helps to improve their creativity and thinking skills. I enjoyed and learnt a lot from the science teacher workshop,’ said an accompanying school teacher. When asked what was the most liked about the event, feedback from a student participant was ‘The freedom to express the elements which depends on the students’ creativity’.
This week, the Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary with a celebratory dinner on 15 August 2018. |
