27 February 2014 – International Medical University’s (IMU) Institute for Research, Development, and Innovation (IRDI) has successfully organised a workshop titled “An Introduction to Meta-Analysis” at its campus in Bukit Jalil. A total of 47 faculty members from the University attended the workshop. It had been a success and very beneficial to all the participants. A/Prof Cho Min Naing was the main convenor of the workshop. She conducted the workshop with a template-based learning (TBL) approach consisting of 20% theory and 80% practical work. IMU’s librarian, Encik Razman Shah, also delivered a very useful talk on how to search the database for journals.
Meta-analysis, one of the thrust areas of research of the University, is a type of research study that involves combining and analysing the results of many different individual studies pertaining to a particular research topic and subsequently drawing a general conclusion.
As an example, A/Prof Cho from the School of Postgraduate Studies had done a meta-analysis of randomised controlled studies to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dihydroartemisin-piperaquine for treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria in endemic countries.
