How do you manage cancer pain ? Cancer affects each individual differently. While one person may experience none or minimal pain, another can be suffering from intensely excruciating pain. It is important to address pain because pain that is well managed will help you lead a comfortable life as well as prevent problems that are common such as pneumonia. Combining definitive treatments like surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy with pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of pain control can optimize pain relief. As mentioned earlier, there are benefits but the limitations of these treatments need to be considered. Multimodal treatment is more effective in providing pain relief. There are a variety of methods that can provide pain relief, based on the severity of your pain. First, we’ll take a look at medications, which can be grouped into the following: – Non-opioids – Opioids – Others
How Can I Score My Pain? A pain score can be used to help you quantify the intensity of your pain. The scale starts from 0 (which means that you do not experience any pain at all) to 10 (which is agonizing pain, the worst that you have experienced in your life thus far). Therefore, a pain score of 5 represents an experience of pain of moderate severity.
