Darrshini A/P Parthibhan: My Journey from Dentistry to Health Informatics

4 Aug 2025

I was enrolled in the credit transfer programme for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, completing my first phase of study at IMU and successfully graduating from the University of Adelaide in 2022. With the ever-growing emphasis on data-driven decisions, I developed a keen interest in the field of data analytics, while also wishing to maintain my healthcare background.

In exploring academic pathways that merged these two fields, I discovered the Master in Health Informatics and Analytics programme at IMU. As a former student of IMU, I was already familiar with the institution’s reputation for academic excellence and innovation. After speaking with the Programme Director and reviewing the curriculum, I was confident and convinced that this programme aligned perfectly with my aspirations.

Having a purely scientific background, taking the decision to embark in data analytics was not an easy one. However, the one-year programme was exceptionally well-structured, encompassing comprehensive modules. It provided a solid and practical foundation for all students of various backgrounds. The thoughtful pace of instruction, the depth of expertise among faculty, and the hands-on assignments and projects greatly facilitated my learning. I was also fortunate to be part of a diverse cohort of peers from various professional fields, which enriched the overall learning experience through collaborative knowledge sharing. Although challenging at first, the unwavering support and guidance from the faculty and lecturers empowered me to follow my interests with confidence.

Beyond technical competencies, the programme also emphasized essential soft skills that are highly sought after in today’s job market. I was pleased to secure a position approximately one month after graduating, through the Protégé Programme at Pfizer Malaysia, where I am currently part of the Digital Team. My role has allowed me to apply the knowledge gained during my studies in a practical setting. While the specific tools and software used in industry may vary, the strong foundational training provided by the programme enabled me to adapt quickly and effectively.

Transitioning into this new field never meant leaving dentistry behind. The knowledge gained over the course of my undergraduate studies is what has brought me here, and I am deeply grateful for that journey. I remain passionate about pursuing a career in data analytics, particularly one that integrates healthcare and technology, and better still in the field of dentistry.
