A Semester 7 student from IMU University reflects on providing chiropractic care, patient education, and community support during a healthcare outreach project in the Philippines.

A Mission I Could Not Miss

I am Jing Yang, a Semester 7 chiropractic student from IMU University. I recently spent two meaningful weeks in the Philippines participating in the chiropractic community health project, Hands for Vitality.

Having previously missed the opportunity to join the August 2025 mission due to scheduling conflicts, I was determined not to miss it again. What initially felt like a short overseas volunteer experience ultimately became one of the most transformative learning journeys of my chiropractic education.

Understanding the Role of Chiropractic in Community Healthcare

This mission profoundly reshaped my understanding of what chiropractic means to the public and the role chiropractors can play within community healthcare.

Throughout the project, chiropractic care functioned as a form of primary healthcare focused on neuromusculoskeletal conditions, with the aim of preventing deterioration and improving quality of life.

The mission was especially significant for underserved communities where access to healthcare services is limited.

Many individuals endured chronic pain but were unable to seek professional care due to financial constraints, geographical barriers, or lack of awareness. Over-the-counter medication was often their only option, providing temporary relief without addressing underlying functional causes.

Patients Who Taught Me the Meaning of Care

Despite the mission being conducted annually, I discovered that almost all the individuals I treated were first-time chiropractic patients. Many had been living with pain for months or even years without understanding their conditions.

What struck me most was not only their physical discomfort but also their resilience. Patients consistently greeted us with warmth, kindness, and gratitude despite their ongoing struggles. Their positivity reminded me that healthcare is not merely about clinical outcomes but also about human connection and compassion.

One of the most impactful moments was witnessing patients’ emotional responses following care. Even after completing four months of clinical internship training, I was still deeply moved by what I observed.

For me, an adjustment is a procedure I have practised repeatedly. For many patients, however, it represented relief after prolonged suffering. Some smiled immediately with visible comfort, while others repeatedly expressed heartfelt gratitude. One patient even became tearful after experiencing sudden pain relief.

That moment reminded me that what may feel routine to a practitioner can be life-changing to a patient. It reinforced the responsibility chiropractors carry and the importance of never becoming complacent or detached from the human impact of care.

The Importance of Patient Education

During the mission,I also realised that a significant portion of my time was devoted to patient education rather than adjustments alone.

I often remind patients that although I might not see them again, I wanted to equip them with strategies for long-term improvement. I demonstrated proper sitting and standing posture, stretching routines, strengthening exercises, lifting techniques, and practical lifestyle modifications.

This experience strengthened my belief that while manual care may provide immediate relief, sustainable improvement depends heavily on education and self-management.

Learning from an International Chiropractic Community

The success of Hands for Vitality was made possible through the dedication of our Philippine partners, including Intercare Chiropractic and the Camara Institute of Chiropractic Sciences.

Their hospitality and logistical support were exceptional, allowing volunteers to focus fully on patient care. Their commitment reflected the strong spirit of collaboration within the chiropractic profession.

The mission also provided valuable opportunities to learn from chiropractors and students from diverse backgrounds. Observing different adjustment styles, assessment approaches, and clinical reasoning processes broadened my professional perspective.

I particularly learned extensively from DC Becky, whose assessment strategies helped me identify dysfunctions more effectively. Her guidance during challenging cases significantly strengthened both my technical skills and clinical confidence.

This experience demonstrated that chiropractic practice is enriched through shared knowledge and continuous learning.

Shared Passion for Patient Care

Equally inspiring was witnessing the collective passion among all participating chiropractors.

Despite differences in training and techniques, everyone shared the same purpose: to listen attentively, assess responsibly, and care for patients with empathy, patience, and professionalism.

This shared mission strengthened my sense of belonging within the chiropractic community and reinforced my developing professional identity.

Looking Ahead

As I returned to Malaysia, I reflected deeply on how chiropractic care has yet to reach its full potential globally.

Many individuals continue to live with treatable neuromusculoskeletal conditions simply because they lack access or awareness. Barriers such as cost, limited availability, and delayed dissemination of information remain significant challenges.

This realisation has motivated me to view chiropractic not merely as a profession, but as a responsibility to serve.

Carrying the Lessons Forward

Chiropractors do more than perform adjustments. We listen to concerns, provide education, promote healthier lifestyles, and recognise when referral to other healthcare professionals is necessary. Ethical practice, professionalism, and compassion must always remain central to our work.

Ultimately, Hands for Vitality reaffirmed my commitment to community service through chiropractic care.

As I approach graduation and transition into professional practice, I carry forward the lessons from this journey: that chiropractic is not only about relieving pain, but also about restoring hope, empowering patients, and improving lives through meaningful human connection.
