As I stood in the grand ballroom of One World Hotel in Petaling Jaya on that unforgettable evening of 6 December, 2024, the weight of the moment hit me all at once. There I was, receiving the IKM Chemistry Graduate Medal Award—one of the highest honours in the field of chemistry—on the same stage where some of the brightest minds in science had been recognised. It was a moment of pure pride, not just for me, but for everyone who had been part of my journey.
But my story didn’t begin on that prestigious stage; it started many years earlier, in the quiet corners of my study areas at IMU University, surrounded by lecture notes, experiments, and late-night cups of coffee. The road that led me to this point was anything but easy, but it was one I had walked with passion, determination, and an unwavering belief in the power of knowledge.
I’ve always been drawn to the intricacies of chemistry—the way molecules interact, the beauty of scientific discovery, and the potential to innovate and solve real-world problems. From the moment I chose Pharmaceutical Chemistry as my field of study at IMU University, I knew I was embarking on a journey that would challenge me in ways I could never have imagined. Little did I know then that this path would become one of growth, resilience, and ultimately, profound achievement.
Pursuing My Degree at IMU University
The years at IMU University were marked by countless hours of study, rigorous exams, and intricate experiments. There were moments of exhilaration when a difficult reaction finally yielded results, but there were also times of frustration when things didn’t go as planned. I recall particularly challenging semesters when I felt overwhelmed by the weight of my academic responsibilities. There were days I doubted my ability to succeed, wondering if all the effort would be worth it. But every time I reached a low point, there was something—or someone—that lifted me up.
It was the unwavering support of my family that kept me going. My parents, with their boundless faith in me, were my pillars of strength. They were the ones who believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. They would call me late at night, offering words of encouragement, even when I was too exhausted to speak. Their belief in my potential, even during my darkest moments, fueled my determination to press on.
Then there were my mentors—my lecturers and peers at IMU University—whose guidance was invaluable. Their expertise and commitment to nurturing my growth as a scientist were the driving forces behind my success. I remember the many study sessions with my classmates, the discussions about chemistry concepts that stretched late into the night, and the moments of mutual encouragement when things seemed tough. It was a community of support that kept me grounded and focused on my goals.
As the years passed, each challenge became an opportunity to learn and grow. I began to see setbacks not as failures, but as stepping stones toward greater understanding. I came to realize that chemistry wasn’t just about memorising reactions or formulas; it was about embracing the process of discovery, learning from mistakes, and constantly striving for better solutions. With each experiment, each class, and each project, I moved closer to the realisation that my passion for chemistry was more than just a career—it was my purpose.
The day I received the IKM Chemistry Graduate Medal Award, I reflected on all the sacrifices, the long nights, and the moments of doubt that had led me to this pinnacle of achievement. It wasn’t just a recognition of my academic accomplishments—it was a tribute to everyone who had supported me along the way.
This award wasn’t just mine; it belonged to my parents, my mentors, my peers, and everyone who had been part of this incredible journey.
A New Beginning
As I stood there, I knew that it was not the end; but a new beginning. The world of chemistry is vast and full of infinite possibilities, and I am more determined than ever to continue my journey of discovery and innovation. This award was not just a testament to my past, but a beacon for the future, guiding me toward new horizons in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry.
As I look forward to the next chapter, I am inspired to make meaningful contributions to the world of science. Whether it’s through research, innovation, or collaboration, I want to continue exploring the frontiers of chemistry and contribute to solving some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
Advice to Fellow Students and Aspiring Scientists
To my fellow students and aspiring scientists, I would like to share one piece of advice: never underestimate the power of perseverance and passion. The road ahead may be difficult, and there will be times when you question yourself, but keep moving forward. Dream big, work hard, and trust in the journey. The challenges you face will shape you, and the successes you achieve will be all the more rewarding because of them.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey.
Cheers to the pursuit of excellence and the endless possibilities that lie ahead!
