Participating in the SEAMEO RECFON Student Mobility Programme in Jakarta was one of the most enriching experiences of my academic and professional journey. This opportunity allowed me to grow in ways I hadn’t imagined, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application while immersing myself in a new cultural and professional environment.
One of the highlights of the programme was conducting nutrition counselling sessions for the staff at SEAMEO RECFON. This hands-on experience not only strengthened my counselling skills but also challenged me to adapt my approach using Bahasa Indonesia. It was an eye-opening experience to provide tailored advice while considering cultural sensitivities and individual needs. This activity deepened my confidence in applying the knowledge and skills I had learned in my degree to real-life scenarios, demonstrating the importance of clear communication and adaptability in delivering effective nutrition care.
Immersing myself in the food culture and eating patterns of Indonesia was another incredible learning opportunity. Exploring local practices and traditions gave me insights into how culture influences dietary habits and nutrition, a perspective that will be invaluable in my future career.

We also had the privilege of attending the 2nd SEAMEO International Conference on Food and Nutrition (ICFN), which focused on critical topics like food wastage and food banking initiatives. These discussions broadened my understanding of global food and nutrition challenges and inspired me to think critically about how I can contribute to solutions.
A particularly memorable moment was serving as one of the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the conference. This role was both exciting and nerve-wracking, but it ultimately boosted my confidence and honed my public speaking skills. It taught me the importance of professionalism and poise in an international setting, skills that I know will be useful in my career.

The programme also allowed us in designing infographics that were featured in SEAMEO RECFON’s magazine. This task allowed me to apply my academic knowledge creatively, combining research-based insights with effective communication techniques. These skills, developed during my degree, were invaluable in ensuring the final products were both informative and visually appealing.
Additionally, SEAMEO RECFON shared their ongoing research projects, which provided a deeper understanding of how evidence-based approaches are applied in the field of nutrition. It was inspiring to see how research is translated into real-world solutions, further reinforcing the importance of staying updated with current studies and practices. Furthermore, it was interesting to see what type of research projects were being conducted in Indonesia related to nutrition.
The SEAMEO RECFON Student Mobility Programme excels in practical learning, cultural immersion, and skill development. We gained hands-on experience in nutrition counseling, explore Indonesian food culture, and address global issues like food wastage. Opportunities like serving as an MC in international conference and creating infographics enhance communication skills, while networking and exposure to research projects deepen professional and academic growth.
Aside from the programme being an academic experience, it was a journey of personal and professional growth. It strengthened my skills, broadened my global perspective, and prepared me to approach challenges with confidence and creativity. Moreover, it has inspired me to bring back these insights to enhance future teaching and learning activities, ensuring that my experiences can benefit others. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and the lasting impact it has had on my journey as a nutrition professional.
