Charting My Professional Path: How IMU Shaped My Future

05 Aug 2024

Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese Medicine remained a relatively obscure field of study in Malaysia. My choice to study Chinese Medicine stemmed from a profound fascination with Chinese culture and history, coupled with a keen interest in modern science and human anatomy. As a former IMU Foundation in Science student, participation in senior sharing forums during my foundation year played a significant role in influencing my decision to study Chinese Medicine in IMU. Reflecting on my 4.5 years at IMU, I can confidently affirm that I’ve discovered the ideal course that broadens my outlook and serves as a motivating compass for my future professional journey.

In IMU, I felt very lucky to explore the elegance of Chinese Medicine in English, which is a crucial communication medium to disseminate and elucidate Chinese Medicine to the world. Our syllabus was integrated with both Western Medicine and Chinese Medicine modules, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, radiology, materia medica, acupuncture, medical classics, and history. Our studies are further enriched by specialised topics such as gynaecology, traumatology, otorhinolaryngology, paediatrics, dermatology, and ophthalmology. This comprehensive approach ensures our readiness for professional practice in today’s healthcare environment.

A Gateway to Hands-On Learning in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Apart from academic endeavours, IMU provided comprehensive clinical preparation.

As one of the few institutions in Malaysia which offers TCM student clinic services to the public, IMU not only extends healthcare benefits to the community but also furnishes invaluable learning opportunities for students. Under the close supervision of lecturers, we engage in consultation and treatment procedures, ensuring hands-on learning experiences.

Empowering Communities Through Traditional Healthcare Initiatives

I’m delighted that I had a chance to provide free T&CM services at the Chi Hui Tang TCM Charity Clinic. Additionally, as part of our MPU community project with Kechara Soup Kitchen, we offered free consultations and acupuncture services to the public. Engaging workshops like the Acupuncture Anatomy workshop at the Academy of Silent Mentor have greatly enhanced our understanding of acupuncture techniques too. Moreover, the IMU Chinese Medicine department hosts a Chinese Medicine Week event annually, featuring interactive booths, seminars, and services for both IMU colleagues and the general public.

IMU Career Development: Guiding Students Toward Professional Success

In addition, I am grateful for the excellent preparation IMU provided for our future career endeavours. The Career Development Unit organised numerous valuable workshops and presentations tailored for final-year IMU students. These sessions equipped us with essential skills such as crafting effective CVs, mastering job interview techniques, and discerning suitable career options based on our strengths and preferences.

Embarking on the Journey of TCM Fertility: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Presently employed at a TCM Fertility Centre, I am engaged in utilising Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments like herbal medications, acupuncture, and moxibustion to assist couples suffering from infertility in achieving conception. TCM plays a pivotal role in enhancing follicle quality, optimising the uterine environment, and improving sperm quality. I am pleased to acknowledge that IMU has equipped me well as my undergraduate degree programme was conducted in English, facilitating seamless collaborations with local healthcare practitioners, who predominantly use English as the primary communication medium.

In conclusion, my university experience in IMU was enriched by invaluable elements. The guidance and support provided by our lecturers were invaluable. Their expertise, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our academic and professional development had shaped me into the competent and compassionate healthcare practitioner I aspire to be. Besides that, the friendships forged during my time at university were a source of immense support. These bonds offered encouragement, laughter, and solidarity during both academic challenges and personal triumphs. Together, these elements formed the foundation of a meaningful university experience that has left an indelible mark on my personal and professional growth.
