Dietetics: Changing Myself and Changing Others

Reasons for Choosing IMU for Your Studies

Food has always been something I loved, and I knew I wanted to turn that passion into a career—whether as a food scientist, nutritionist, or chef. It was only after exploring different options that I discovered dietetics—a profession focused on improving health and managing diseases through food.

This path reminded me of my friends and family who struggled with health issues, often unsure about what they could or could not eat. At that time, my own eating habits were far from ideal—instant noodles, fast food, and boba were my daily staples. That realisation motivated me to understand the science behind food and nutrition, not just to help others, but also to improve myself.

Knowing IMU’s reputation as an established institution focused on educating healthcare professionals, I believed I would receive a strong foundation in dietetics while also gaining a broader understanding of health through interprofessional learning.

Experience at IMU

My journey in the Dietetics with Nutrition programme at IMU began during the COVID-19 lockdown, making the transition to university life a challenging one. As the pandemic subsided and campus life began, my experience at IMU gradually became a fulfilling blend of learning and social life.

Academically, one of the highlights was learning Medical Nutrition Therapy. I especially enjoyed the practical classes, where we got to cook the meals we had planned for our patients. It was interesting to see what my classmates prepared and to receive valuable feedback from the lecturers.

Outside the classroom, my passion for photography gave me the opportunity to capture moments at numerous social events, community activities and professional conferences, broadening my perspective and meeting many new friends.

The most impactful part of my IMU journey, however, was my final year placement experience. During my clinical placement, I had the first opportunity to experience being a dietitian—talking with a patient, learning their stories, asking them about their diet and giving advice to meaningfully improve their health through the foods they choose. I’ll never forget the feeling of seeing a patient’s condition improve and hearing their words of gratitude.

My community placement was equally impactful and enriching. I had the opportunity to engage with the community in the form of giving talks and organising nutrition related activities. I especially enjoyed how I could combine creativity and knowledge in order to ignite curiosity and awareness towards better nutrition and health. It was highly rewarding to see people inspired to take better care of their health.

Now, standing at the finishing line and reflecting on my journey, I realised how much I’ve grown. I found my calling in helping others improve their diet and health, giving me a sense of purpose. Along the way, I myself have also changed. Habits like not eating fried chicken skin, something unthinkable to the old me, are now second nature.

Plans for the Future

Although I’ve yet to begin my professional career, I’m excited for what’s ahead. I’m particularly interested in community nutrition, as I believe dietitians have an important role in preventing diet-related diseases and empowering healthier communities.

Advice for Future Students

To my future juniors, be bold and adventurous. Grab every opportunity that comes your way. Dietetics is a diverse field, offering many paths ranging from clinical, community, academia and even entrepreneurship. Explore widely and discover which part of dietetics truly catches your eye.

Also, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, they’re part of the learning journey. On the last day of my placement, my clinical instructor told me, “Today is your last day as a student who can ask questions, after this, you’re on your own.

Appreciate every opportunity you have to learn from the lecturers, who are all highly experienced experts in the field and genuinely want to see you grow.

And most importantly, cherish all the memories you make along the way, with your friends, lecturers and everyone who played a part in this journey with you.
