Effective communication lies at the heart of quality nursing care. Recognising its importance, the NU124 cohort of nursing students attended an engaging communication workshop on 26 December 2025 at the IMU Seremban Campus, facilitated by Ms May Goh Lai Khim and Ms Deepa Kaliappen. The session aimed to equip nursing students with practical communication skills essential for building trust, ensuring patient safety, and fostering teamwork in clinical practice.
The workshop highlighted how communication goes beyond spoken words. Students explored the impact of tone of voice, body language, eye contact, empathy, and active listening in shaping patient experiences. Emphasis was also placed on professional communication within healthcare teams, underscoring its role in preventing misunderstandings and enhancing collaborative care.
Learning Through Reflection
The session encouraged students to reflect on their own communication styles and apply insights gained through interactive discussions and peer feedback.
Dylan (NU124) reflected that the workshop reinforced the importance of clear communication and rapport building with patients. Peer feedback helped him identify his strengths while recognising the value of constructive criticism in improving patient care. Learning to detect subtle patient cues enabled him to respond more thoughtfully and professionally. He expressed his appreciation to Ms May for coordinating the workshop and shared that the skills gained would be valuable not only during future clinical postings but also beyond the ward environment.
For Jamey (NU124), the workshop was an eye-opening experience that deepened her understanding of the different components of communication. Learning about the Analyser, Promoter, Supporter, and Controller communication styles helped her adapt her approach when interacting with peers and patients. She recognised how effective communication positively influences teamwork and patient outcomes, and she appreciated the meaningful feedback provided by the clinical instructors, which enriched her reflective learning journey.
Similarly, Shanthini (NU124) shared that the workshop enhanced her understanding of communication in healthcare, particularly in building patient trust and strengthening teamwork. Through the Behavioural Perception Matrix, she gained greater self-awareness by identifying her own communication style and recognising the need to adapt it in different clinical situations. The practical examples shared during the session helped her feel more prepared and confident for upcoming clinical postings.
Building Future-Ready Nurses
Overall, the communication workshop provided the NU124 cohort with valuable insights into effective communication, self-reflection, and professional growth. By strengthening both interpersonal and team communication skills, the session has laid a strong foundation for students to deliver compassionate, safe, and patient-centred care as they progress into their clinical practice and future nursing roles.
“Every word, gesture, and moment of empathy counts. Effective communication is the foundation of healing and teamwork in nursing.”
