Exploring Science and Culture: Our Internship Journey at Fudan University’s School of Pharmacy

28 May 2025

Shanghai, China: Over the past few months, five of us (Pharmaceutical Chemistry students at IMU University) had the incredible opportunity to embark on a research internship at Fudan University’s prestigious School of Pharmacy. Each of us was placed in different departments, two in Medicinal Chemistry, one in Natural Medicine, one in Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry, and one in Pharmaceutical Analysis, giving us a diverse and enriching experience in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. Beyond the lab, we also explored the rich cultural heritage of China, traveling to cities like Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing.

Diving into Research

Medicinal Chemistry

Yong See Wei

Working in the Medicinal Chemistry department, we were involved in synthesising novel drug compounds and optimising their biological activity. From running column chromatography to analysing NMR spectra, we gained hands-on experience in organic synthesis—an essential skill for future pharmacists.

The mentorship from professors and postgraduate students was invaluable, teaching us not just techniques but also critical thinking needed in drug development.

Natural Medicine

Leverne Wang Yi Xuan

In the Natural Medicine lab, the focus was on extracting and identifying bioactive compounds from traditional Chinese herbs. Learning about the intersection of modern pharmacology and ancient remedies was fascinating.

I used techniques like HPLC and western blotting to analyse plant extracts, deepening my appreciation for nature’s role in medicine.

Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry

Etha Han Yi Ting

This department introduced me to the world of radioactive isotopes used in diagnostics and therapy. Handling specialised equipment and learning about radiopharmaceutical safety protocols was both challenging and exciting. Seeing how these compounds are used in cancer imaging gave me a new perspective on pharmaceutical innovation.

Pharmaceutical Analysis Department

Lim Jia Xin

Quality control is crucial in drug development, and in this department, I worked on analytical methods to identify pesticide residue in natural drug samples. Techniques like ELISA and chromatography were part of our daily routine, reinforcing the importance of precision in pharmaceuticals.

Beyond the Lab: Cultural Explorations

While research was the core of our internship, we also embraced the opportunity to explore China’s rich history and breathtaking landscapes during our weekends.

In Suzhou, often called the “Venice of the East,” we wandered through exquisite classical gardens and glided along serene canals, enchanted by the city’s timeless beauty.

Hangzhou captivated us with the mesmerising West Lake, where we participated in traditional tea ceremonies and learned about the cultural significance of Longjing tea.

Meanwhile, in Nanjing, a city steeped in history, we visited the Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum and the poignant Nanjing Massacre Memorial, gaining deeper insights into China’s past.

These journeys not only offered a refreshing break from lab work but also enriched our appreciation for Chinese culture, traditions, and heritage.

A Transformative Experience

“Our time at Fudan University was more than just an academic internship, it was a journey of growth, discovery, and unforgettable memories. From the precision of lab work to the beauty of China’s landscapes, we returned home with not just new knowledge but also lifelong friendships and a broader worldview.

We are immensely grateful to Fudan University, our supervisors, and everyone who made this experience possible.

For aspiring pharmaceutical chemistry students, we highly recommend international internships that can shape both your career and your perspective of the world.

We appreciate the efforts of the School of Pharmacy for arranging the placement and providing financial support.”
