After completing my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science, I began to realise that traditional lab research wasn’t quite the right path for me. I found myself increasingly drawn to the world of data and how it could be used to improve healthcare systems and support better decision-making. That interest led me to the Master’s in Health Informatics and Analytics at IMU, which turned out to be exactly what I needed.
What really impressed me about the programme was how well it integrated both the technical and clinical aspects of healthcare. It wasn’t just about learning how to use tools like Python, R, SQL, and Tableau. We also explored essential topics when working with sensitive healthcare information such as big data analytics, machine learning, data governance, and compliance.
But the experience went far beyond technical skills. I learned how to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds, manage projects, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively. These soft skills have proven just as valuable in the workplace as anything I learned in the classroom.
The support I received at IMU was also a major highlight. Dr Yam Wai Keat, our then Programme Director and my mentor, was incredibly involved and always encouraged us to take advantage of opportunities beyond the classroom. She regularly shared information about industry talks, conferences, and networking events. I was also fortunate to have Dr Fong Pui Kwan as my dissertation supervisor. Her guidance and feedback throughout the research process were invaluable, and she played a key role in helping me shape my project into something I was truly proud of.
The IMU Industry Partnership & Career Development Unit was equally helpful, offering guidance on CV writing and connecting us with potential internship providers, including hospitals and healthcare companies.
What I Am Doing Now?
Today, I’m working at Abbott Laboratories in the Commercial Excellence Department under the Established Pharmaceuticals Division. I collaborate closely with both sales and marketing teams and work across areas such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Closed-Loop Marketing (CLM), Multi-Channel Engagement (MCE), and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) monitoring. My projects span both local and regional levels, and I apply the skills I gained at IMU every day.
As someone just starting out in this industry, I recognise that there’s still so much to learn. I’m excited about what lies ahead and look forward to taking on more complex projects, further deepening my understanding of how data can be used to create meaningful change in healthcare.
Advice for Anyone Considering This Path
To anyone considering this path, my advice is to stay curious and open to learning. A strong academic background is important, but the working world brings its own set of challenges and lessons. Be willing to listen, adapt, and grow. Your voice matters, and IMU is a fantastic place to begin building the confidence and skills you’ll need to make a real difference.
