Foundation in Arts Students Gain Firsthand Insight into Financial Markets Through Educational Trip to Bursa Malaysia

6 May 2025

On 25 February 2025, students from the Foundation in Arts programme at IMU University had the opportunity to visit Bursa Malaysia as part of an educational trip aimed at enhancing their understanding of the financial markets. The visit was led by the Director of the Centre for Pre-University (CPU), Dr James, Deputy Director Sharon Chan, and Senior Lecturer of Economics, Dr Suresh Raja Manickam.

The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to stock market operations, investment risks, and the platforms available for learning and training in stock market investment. Throughout the session, students were introduced to the fundamentals of stock trading, including market trends, investment strategies and the identification of scams and frauds within the financial sector.

A key highlight of the visit was the hands-on experience in virtual trading, where students participated in a simulated stock market environment. This mock trading session allowed them to apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting, thereby strengthening their grasp of investment decision-making and market dynamics.

In addition to the trading experience, students explored both online and offline platforms that offer financial education and tools for investors. The interactive nature of the visit enriched their classroom learning and offered a valuable perspective on real-world financial practices.

“Before the trip, I had only a basic grasp of the stock market, but the visit significantly deepened my understanding. The lecture session provided clear insights into how companies are listed, how stocks are traded, and the various factors influencing market movements, including global events and investor behaviour. The gallery tour offered a firsthand look at the trading environment, enhancing my appreciation of how the market functions in real time.”
