From FIS to MBBS in IMU University: My Journey to Pearl Excellence Award

18 Jul 2024

Upon completion of my high school education, I embarked on my academic pursuits by enrolling in the Foundation in Science (FIS) programme at IMU University. My decision to choose IMU was based on its distinguished status as a leading medical university in Malaysia, renowned for nurturing proficient healthcare practitioners. The FIS programme presented a comprehensive curriculum to facilitate the transition to undergraduate studies. The programme’s emphasis on fostering critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, and the accessibility of experienced faculty members convinced me that it was the ideal pathway towards my goal of becoming a medical professional and I am glad with the choice I made.

Why I Chose to Study Medicine at IMU?

The decision to pursue Medicine at IMU University was influenced by a positive experience during my foundation studies. IMU’s medical curriculum places particular emphasis on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, effectively preparing students for the multifaceted demands of the healthcare profession. Furthermore, IMU’s dedication to community service and ethical practice strongly resonated with my values. The institution’s focus on nurturing compassionate and proficient healthcare professionals perfectly aligns with my ambition to effectively contribute to a positive change within the medical field.

Best Experiences and Challenges During FIS and Medicine at IMU

One of the most rewarding experiences during my time at IMU was serving as the class representative for my cohort. Being a class rep brought many benefits, like boosting my leadership and communication skills, and giving me the chance to connect with faculty, administration, and peers. It also taught me responsibility and boosted my self-confidence and teamwork skills. This experience inspired me to volunteer as an IHP Student Mentor during my medical degree, where I guided juniors with their IHP projects.

I was also honored to be the President of  IMU Eco Friends Club in 2022. During my tenure, we worked with the IMU Student Representative Council (SRC) and other clubs to organise IMU’s first Fright Night. I learned how to organise and manage events, especially with a tight budget.

I have also been part of the Multimedia Team during the UNICEF Youth Advocacy Workshop and participated in IMU U-Race 6.0, IMU AMSA Malaysian Sign Language Workshop, and IMU Chariofare Carnival. These experiences helped me grow both personally and professionally.

In addition to that, I have volunteered in the IMU Foundation Clinic and with non-profit organisations such as Doctors On Ground (DnG) for health screening programmes and I was able to interact with diverse communities and understand their healthcare needs through these outreach programmes.

Recently, I also participated in an E-Poster Competition during the MERCY Malaysia International Humanitarian Conference 2024.

Beyond IMU, I have been taking Carnatic vocal and veena lessons at Shrutilaya Music School. I have performed in several concerts, both locally and internationally, and even gained some experience as an emcee during one of the concerts.

The journey had its hurdles of course. Juggling studies and extracurricular activities was a real challenge especially because I am also a IMU Pantai-Gleneagles scholar, but it taught me so much about time management and resilience. When I made the switch from FIS to Medicine, I tried out different study methods and stuck with the ones that helped me ace my exams. Despite the obstacles, I’m incredibly thankful to my parents for their unwavering support and encouragement which keeps me going till today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my professors and mentors as well for their guidance throughout my journey so far.

Winning the Pearl Excellence Award

The Pearl Excellence Award is awarded to students completing Phase 1 of the Medical Programme who showed outstanding engagement and performance in the academic sessions and extracurricular activities. Winning this award was a testament to my continuous dedication and hard work to keep improving myself. I am truly grateful for this incredible recognition and it motivates me to continue striving for excellence and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Career Planning After Completing Medicine

Currently, when asked about the field I would like to specialise in, I still express my uncertainty as I strongly believe it is important to choose a path that I’m truly passionate about.

Right now, I am getting hands-on experience in different areas while doing my clinical postings at IMU Clinical Campus, Seremban. Ultimately, my goal is to make a positive impact on medical research and help improve the healthcare system in the future.

Inspiration for Future FIS-Medicine Students at IMU

If you’re thinking about the FIS-Medicine route at IMU, I’d say go for it with an open mind and a positive attitude! It might be tough in the beginning, but it is also super rewarding.

Make the most of the chances for personal and professional growth and get involved in your studies and extracurricular activities. They will make your time at IMU so much more enriching.

With dedication and determination, you can surely make your dreams come true!
