Participating in the Hands for Vitality mobility programme in the Philippines was one of the most eye-opening and meaningful experiences of my journey as an IMU Chiropractic student. It was more than just an overseas programme or a clinical exposure programme. It was a powerful reminder of why I chose healthcare in the first place.
Throughout the programme, our team had the opportunity to provide free chiropractic care to underprivileged and marginalised communities where access to chiropractic services is extremely limited. Many of the individuals we met had been living with pain for years, often without the means or opportunity to seek professional care. Being able to serve them, even in a small way, allowed me to see firsthand how much impact compassionate, hands-on care can have on a person’s quality of life.

What struck me most was how grateful the community was, not just for the treatment, but for being seen and heard. Each interaction reminded me that healthcare goes beyond techniques and diagnoses. It is about empathy, dignity, and genuine human connection. These moments deepened my appreciation for service as a core value in healthcare, and reinforced the responsibility we carry as future practitioners.
The experience was further enriched by working closely with local Philippine healthcare workers and interacting with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds. Collaborating across borders showed me the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity in delivering effective care. It was inspiring to witness the dedication of local practitioners who continue to serve their communities despite limited resources.
Hands for Vitality challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and reflect on my role in addressing healthcare inequities. It reminded me that chiropractic care should not be a privilege reserved for a few, but a service that can and should reach those who need it most. This experience has strengthened my resolve to practise with greater compassion, social awareness, and purpose in the future.
I am deeply grateful to IMU University for the opportunity to be part of this programme, and to everyone who made Hands for Vitality possible. It is an experience I will carry with me throughout my professional journey, shaping not only how I practise chiropractic, but also how I serve humanity.
