Honouring Excellence: Dr Choo Wai Sun, IMU Alumni Award Winner 2025

25 Mar 2025

For Dr Choo Wai Sun, receiving the IMU Alumni Award 2025 is more than just an honour—it feels like a homecoming. Grateful and humbled by the recognition, he reflects on his journey from IMU to becoming a respected cardiologist, acknowledging how his alma mater laid the foundation for his career.

His path to medicine wasn’t a straight one. Initially drawn to engineering, Dr Choo had a change of heart during his A-levels, realising that his true calling lay in medicine. Financial constraints made that dream seem out of reach, but a scholarship to study at IMC (now IMU) in 1996 opened the door. When the Asian financial crisis hit in 1998, IMU introduced its own five-year medical programme, allowing him to continue his studies locally as part of the pioneering clinical school cohort in Seremban.

Reflecting on his time at IMU, Dr Choo Wai Sun recalls a journey that was both demanding and transformative. The sleepless nights, rigorous academic challenges, and vast amount of knowledge to master tested his limits. Yet, these experiences fostered resilience, adaptability, and a deep appreciation for the ever-evolving field of medicine—qualities that continue to guide his career today. Graduating with Distinction in 2002, Dr Choo was recognised as the top student of the cohort and awarded the prestigious John Bosco Gold Medal.

A Passion for Cardiology

His passion for cardiology took root during his Housemanship, where he saw firsthand how timely cardiac care could save lives. The fast-paced nature of the field and its constant advancements in treatment cemented his decision to specialise in cardiology. But the journey wasn’t always smooth. Failing to secure a spot in cardiology training on his first attempt was a setback, but instead of seeing it as a failure, he viewed it as a chance to grow.

He took on a role as a clinical lecturer at Penang Medical College, where he deepened his expertise while mentoring future doctors. This experience not only refined his teaching skills but also reinforced his passion for cardiology, ultimately leading to his successful entry into specialist training.

Dr Choo credits much of his professional growth to the lessons he learned at IMU—perseverance, innovation, and the ability to embrace change. He remains especially grateful to his mentors, particularly Prof Richard Loh, whose guidance and support played a crucial role in shaping his path.

Balancing a demanding medical career with personal commitments is no easy task, but Dr Choo remains grounded in his priorities. Guided by his faith, he places God first, family second, and career third. He believes true success isn’t just about professional achievements but about maintaining harmony between work and personal life. By setting clear boundaries and protecting time with his loved ones, he ensures that his career serves a purpose beyond personal ambition.

Looking ahead, Dr Choo is committed to advancing cardiac healthcare and raising awareness in the community. He hopes to integrate the latest medical advancements with patient-centered care, ensuring that his work continues to make a meaningful impact.
