KUALA LUMPUR, October 2025 – In a powerful demonstration of education in action, Bachelor of Business Administration in Healthcare Management (BBAHM) students from IMU University recently partnered with the Stay Al-Kitab Tahfiz School to conduct a Community Disaster Hazard Assessment and Preparation Workshop. The event, held on 11 October, 2025, successfully blended academic learning with tangible social responsibility.
The workshop brought together 30 village heads, students from the orphanage, six BBAHM student facilitators, and a faculty supervisor. The programme was designed to equip the community with practical skills to identify and manage environmental and occupational risks.
The initial pre-visit survey conducted on 26 July 2025 at Kampung Jalan Enam Kaki, Kampung Bukit Kepong and Kampung Paya Tanjung in Beranang, Selangor identified several hazards (mostly related to potential flooding).
The four-hour session was divided into interactive segments, beginning with a two-hour talk on disaster awareness and preparedness. This was followed by a one-hour poster rotation session, allowing for in-depth, small-group discussions. The workshop concluded with a hands on one-hour community mapping exercise, where participants actively identified local hazards and proposed prevention strategies.

“The workshop was very useful. We got to learn new things that we can apply here to keep ourselves safer,” shared by some of the participating students.
The initiative was a core component of the BBAHM programme’s commitment to social awareness and ethical responsibility. The learning outcomes focused on real-world application, requiring students to:
- Identify and categorize community hazards through direct engagement.
- Assess risk levels using professional tools like risk matrices and community maps.
- Develop and recommend preventive measures and preparedness strategies to empower the community.
- Develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills through experiential learning in a real-world community setting.
- To promote disaster preparedness and safety strategies
A formal report detailing the findings and recommendations from the workshop will be forwarded to the district office for further review and potential action.
Prof Dr Adlina Suleiman, the lecturer supervisor for the project, emphasized the programme’s ethos: “Our BBAHM pathway is designed to create leaders who understand that healthcare management extends beyond hospital walls. It’s about community health, prevention, and social responsibility. This workshop allowed our students to apply their knowledge in risk management and operations to a real-world context, making a direct impact while polishing their skills.”
