Hands-On Learning at a Five-day Workshop

Seven Biomedical Science students from IMU University, accompanied by two lecturers recently participated in the Integrated Workshop on Hematological Diagnostics and Laboratory Techniques, held from 12–16 January 2026 at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL).

This five-day programme provided an enriching platform for students to deepen their knowledge and practical understanding of hematological disease diagnostics.

The workshop was designed to enhance participants’ competencies through a combination of

  • Lectures,
  • Case discussions, and
  • Hands-on exposure

Key areas covered include:

  • Cytomorphology,
  • Bone marrow interpretation,
  • Flow cytometry, and
  • Cytogenetic techniques

In addition to the online sessions, students also had the valuable opportunity to visit the Premier Integrated Laboratory at PHKL, where they observed real-world laboratory operations.

Bridging Theory and Practice

The workshop offered students a rare glimpse into the practical application of classroom knowledge.

Through exposure to real clinical cases and advanced laboratory technologies, participants gained a deeper appreciation of the critical role biomedical scientists play in healthcare.

Nur Athirah Qistina Binti Mohd Khaidzir Fahmi shared that while some concepts were initially challenging, the experience was highly rewarding:

The depth of content offered valuable insight into how the medical field operates behind the scenes. I’m certain these concepts and case studies will help me in the upper semester.

She also highlighted the impact of the lab visit:

Observing the sophisticated machinery, the efficiency of laboratory staff, and the precision required in reporting reinforced an important truth: Biomedical Science truly serves as the backbone of the medical world.”

Exposure to Real-World Laboratory Practice

Students particularly valued the opportunity to explore hospital laboratories and observe workflows in diagnostic, genetics, and pathology settings.

Nur Alysa Sofia Binti Muhammad Nur Iskandar Ssong commented:

It was especially interesting to learn about cytogenetics and how to read results from a flow cytometer. The staff were very friendly and always happy to answer our questions.”

Similarly, Samantha Nathan A/P Packianathan noted:

This experience helped me better understand how theoretical knowledge is applied in practice. It also allowed me to discover my strong interest in the pathology laboratory.”

Sahana Shri A/P Ramanitharan shared:

I am grateful for the opportunity to attend the PHKL workshop, where I experienced the real-time workings of diagnostic, cytogenetic, and histopathological laboratories, and gained valuable insight into the roles of biomedical professionals in clinical settings.”

Inspiration for Future Careers

The workshop also served as a source of motivation and career inspiration for students at different stages of their studies.

Phong Xi Shan, a first-year student, shared:

The workshop gave me valuable insight into what future career pathways in this field might look like. I am definitely looking forward to future lab visits and similar opportunities.”

Rachel Low Ser Myn expressed her appreciation for learning directly from experts:

“I am grateful for the opportunity to learn directly from specialists and explore hospital laboratories.”

Meherin Pretty added:

“The lectures were extremely knowledgeable, giving me deeper insight into cytogenetics, hematology, and flow cytometry. The lab visit truly enhanced my learning experience.”

IMU’s Commitment to Experiential Learning

This initiative reflects IMU’s commitment to providing holistic and experiential learning opportunities for Biomedical Science students.

By integrating academic knowledge with real-world exposure, students are better equipped with the skills, mindset, and professional awareness needed for future careers in healthcare and research.
