Kuala Lumpur, 5 July 2025IMU University (IMU), Malaysia’s premier comprehensive healthcare university, proudly celebrated the graduation of 245 students across its diverse healthcare programmes at a grand convocation ceremony held at its Bukit Jalil campus.

The event marked not only a major academic milestone for the Class of 2025 but also highlighted IMU’s continued evolution as a future-ready, globally engaged institution—through symbolic firsts, meaningful recognitions, and institutional innovation.

A Convocation of Firsts: Recognising Innovation, Impact, and Leadership

In a proud moment for the University, the convocation saw the inaugural presentation of two prestigious awards:

  • The Professor Gerard George Distinguished Alumnus Award for Innovation and Impact was awarded to Dr Paul Chan Hong Kit (MBBS, ME2/28), a visionary healthcare entrepreneur and public health leader renowned for his transformative contributions to digital health and community wellbeing in East Malaysia.
  • The Professor Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail Gamechanger Award was presented to Dr Chua Teck Kwang (Bachelor of Dental Surgery, DT1/20) for his academic excellence, pioneering research in oral health, and active engagement in community outreach.

The awards were presented by IMU Chancellor YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman and Pro-Chancellor YBhg Academician Datin Paduka Setia Dato’ Dr Aini Ideris, respectively.

Symbolising Legacy and Aspiration: Unveiling the New IMU University Mace

Adding ceremonial depth to the occasion was the introduction of the newly designed IMU University mace—a powerful symbol of the University’s transformation from a pioneering private medical and health sciences university to a comprehensive healthcare university that now embraces business, technology, veterinary medicine, psychology, and the social sciences, all underpinned by the One Health philosophy.

Crowning the mace is a golden globe representing IMU’s international outlook and global impact. Geometric patterns inspired by Malaysian heritage, sculpted leaf motifs, and engraved IMU logos reflect the university’s academic journey, cultural pride, and ongoing renewal. Complementing the mace is the Chancellor’s robe – its intricately woven with songket brocade symbolising the interweaving of leadership, tradition, and intellectual pursuit.

Future-Ready, Globally Minded, Purpose-Driven

In her convocation address, Vice-Chancellor and CEO, Professor Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail, reaffirmed IMU’s commitment to innovation and adaptability in an era shaped by Artificial Intelligence, digital transformation, and evolving global needs.

She highlighted the University’s academic expansion, including the launch of the School of Veterinary Medicine and new programmes in the social sciences—such as the Foundation in Arts and Business Administration—all part of the institution’s plans to broaden its scope across human, animal, and environmental health.

She also celebrated the university’s 96% graduate employability rate, along with its success at the 2025 ITEX Exhibition, where IMU earned three gold and three silver medals—a testament to its innovation in teaching, learning, and research.

“Today marks not just the start of your career—it marks the beginning of a lifelong journey. Beyond being career-ready, you must also be future-ready. As long as you are willing to grow, learn, and strive to be better than you were yesterday, you will continue to thrive,”

With a network of over 16,000 alumni across 40 countries, IMU continues to shape the future of health, science, and education—empowering graduates to become not just healthcare professionals, but purpose-driven changemakers in society.
