Dr Anjani Uma Rani Mosalikanti, a lecturer at the Institute of Research, Development & Innovation (IRDI), together with team members Dr Kit-Kay Mak (in the photo on the right) and Prof Dr Mallikarjuna Rao Pichika (in the photo on the left) from IMU University‘s School of Pharmacy, have successfully secured the prestigious FAILSAFE grant worth GBP 75,000.
The FAILSAFE grant, awarded by the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) in collaboration with the University of Exeter, is a prestigious funding initiative designed to support innovative research aimed at addressing critical global health challenges.
This one-year grant will support pioneering research conducted at IMU which is aimed at tackling multidrug-resistant fungal infections, particularly those caused by Candida species, which pose an escalating threat to human health. The project, titled “Targeting GPI-anchored Wall Transfer Protein 1 (GWT1) to Combat Multidrug-Resistant Candida Infections,” seeks to address the growing resistance to existing antifungal treatments. The research will focus on targeting the Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored Wall Transfer Protein 1 (GWT1) in fungal cells, offering a novel approach to disrupt the pathogenicity of Candida species.
“We are very pleased to receive this prestigious research funding from the UK MRC. This opportunity enables us to conduct impactful research aimed at finding solutions to combat multi-drug-resistant fungal infections.”
