Held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the IMU Foundation in Science programme, the IMU National STEM Innovation Competition 2024 serves as an exciting platform aimed at empowering young minds to redefine how we live, work, and interact. This competition was organised in response to the declining interest in STEM fields in Malaysia with the aim of inspiring and engaging students in these crucial areas.
Centered around the theme “Innovation in STEM: Transforming Lifestyle,” the competition was open to secondary school and pre-university students to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills in areas such as Health, IT, Robotics, and AI. By focusing on transforming lifestyles, participants were encouraged to develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges, improve quality of life, and shape a brighter future for all.
Participants had the opportunity to develop innovative projects in STEM in the following areas, including:
-Designing prototypes
-Developing software applications
-Conducting research studies
-Creating conceptual designs
A total of 35 teams, comprising 162 participants, registered for Category A (Secondary School) of this Competition, while 12 teams with 51 participants signed up for Category B (Pre-University). All participants are local students from across Malaysia, except for two international students from IMU.
In Phase One of the competition, participants submitted video presentations to introduce their projects, outlining their problem statements, innovations, contributions, impacts, and commercialisation potential. This phase ran from 30 June 2024 to 6 September 2024, with finalists announced on 13 September 2024. The top 10 projects from each category were selected to advance to Phase 2 (the final round).
All finalists convened for the Final Competition on 23 September 2024 at the Dewan Chancellor, IMU Bukit Jalil campus, creating a bustling atmosphere as the event coincided with the Science Discovery Challenge held on the same day. During the finals of the IMU National STEM Innovation Competition 2024, the finalists showcased their prototypes or software applications to the judges, who selected the top three projects in each category as the winners of the competition.
Commenting on the competition, Director of IMU’s Centre for Pre-University, Dr. James Walsh, said, “It was a pleasure to launch the recent STEM Innovation Competition and present the awards. The projects showcased were technically impressive, and the presentations were very enjoyable. I was especially impressed by the high standard of the school students’ projects and their overall knowledge. Congratulations to all the participants and winners.”
