Prof Aziz with Ryan San Yi Leong On 21 May 2024, Ryan San Yi Leong, Chief Executive Officer, and Ik Zu Quan, Chief Technology Officer of EM2AI, visited IMU to present appreciation plaques to IMU‘s Vice Chancellor Prof Abdul Aziz Baba, Prof Toh Chooi Gait, and A/Prof Elaine Chan Wan Ling for their significant contributions to the successful development of a dental AI system. This system provides dental auto-charting using dental radiographs and, with the entry of clinical findings, automatically generates the diagnosis, treatment options, and treatment plan for dental conditions, creating a comprehensive dental report for the patient.
EM2AI is a subsidiary company of the Q&M Dental Group (Singapore), a public listed company. Ryan expressed his deep appreciation to Prof Aziz for believing in the start-up company and to IMU’s team under the able leadership of Prof Toh in developing the AI system.
Prof Toh Chooi Gait (as depicted in the photo below) received 2 research contracts in 2019 and 2020 respectively from EM2AI amounting to about RM2 million to develop the AI system.
Together with her team members Prof Leong Chee Oon, A/Prof Elaine Chan Wan Ling (as depicted in the image on the right) and Dr Rohit Menon as well as contributions from 14 other lecturers from the School of Dentistry, the foundations were laid for the development of the AI system.
The system was independently verified by staff from the University of Malaya with the result of extremely high accuracy prior to successful registration as a medical device in Singapore. The system has been successfully used in more than 150 dental clinics of the Q&M Dental Group in Singapore and Malaysia with positive feedback from the dentists for the past couple of years.
Since then, the system was further enhanced by the staff of EM2AI with Prof Toh appointed as a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of EM2AI. Recently the product was launched for public use and subscription by other dental clinics.
