Jom Kayuh II: An IMU Health Awareness Project in Batu Pahat

13 October 2013International Medical University (IMU) in collaboration with National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) organised Jom Kayuh II: Demi Harapan at Dataran Penggaram in Batu Pahat with the aim of educating and enlightening local people about symptoms and early cancer detection of as well as raise funds for NCSM. The event kicked off at 8am. Prof Ong Kok Hai from IMU Bukit Jalil officiated the Non-Competitive Cycling Event.  Although it was raining, it definitely did not dampen our cyclists’ spirit and enthusiasm. In the meantime, those who did not participate in the cycling event polished their dance moves with Anggun and her team. Both the aerobic event and cycling events were aimed to promote and encourage healthy lifestyle among the locals.

The event was followed with an opening speech by Teegeena Jeeva Kuamar, President of the Jom Kayuh Project. She represented her batch mates and comprehensively elaborated the purpose and significance of health screening and healthy lifestyle, early cancer detection as well as importance of cancer screening. The event was then officiated by Datuk Sri Idris Jusi, Ahli Parlimen Batu Pahat, Pn Gan Peck Cheng ADUN Dataran Penggaram and Prof Aziz Baba, Vice Preseident of IMU. Each of them gave a speech emphasising the importance of health screening and early cancer detection. They were also proud to be part of such an event and hoped to have similar activities in the near future.  The event was followed by a performance by our batch band; “Carcinoma” which was led by Tatsuki.

In the meantime, many activities were taking place in the booths. We had health screening booths, games booths for children, basic life support and trauma booth as well a booth specially set up by the NCSM. All the booths received good feedback from the attendees. There was especially a lot of interest and benefit from the booth set-up by the NCSM. This booth gave a comprehensive summary with regards of the role of NCSM in the society.

NCSM was represented by Ms Mikki from the Malacca branch. She spoke about NCSM and their role in helping raise funds for the NCSM. She represented the NCSM in extending its gratitude for our efforts. She truly appreciated the enthusiastic young doctors’ to be for their efforts and time spent in organising such a meaningful event. After her speech, YBhg Prof Dato’ ST Kew, Dean, School of Medicine, IMU presented Ms. Mikki with a mock cheque worth RM 7200. The event was followed by a short speech from breast cancer survivors which was truly insightful and inspirational.

The event officially ended at 11:30 am. The cyclists brought home certificates of participation while some lucky attendees took home prizes from the lucky draws. Overall, the event was very well received by the audience and the organising committee received loads of praise and appreciation from both the locals and NCSM. The organising committee and student volunteers were delighted with the feedback and satisfied with the outcome after having had put much work in making the event a success.
