Volunteering experiences play a crucial role in shaping future healthcare professionals. In this article, an IMU University chiropractic alumnus shares his experience volunteering with Hands for Vitality, highlighting clinical exposure, mentorship, patient care, and professional growth in a high-volume service setting.
Gaining hands-on clinical experience
I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to volunteer as a student chiropractor providing care to individuals who have difficulty accessing chiropractic services. Participating in Hands for Vitality exposed me to a fast-paced service environment where I had to think on my feet, adapt quickly, and learn continuously through real patient encounters.
Mentorship and Peer Support in Chiropractic Training
This experience would not have been possible without the guidance of our supervising chiropractors and the support of more experienced peers. Their encouragement and mentorship played a significant role in my development throughout the mission.
Overcoming Challenges in High-Volume Settings

Meeting new patients, chiropractors, and fellow volunteers was deeply enriching for my growth as a future chiropractor. It strengthened both my communication skills and my confidence in helping others. To be honest, on the first day I felt quite overwhelmed and unsure of myself. Facing unfamiliar patients in a high-volume setting was initially daunting.
However, with repeated exposure and consistent guidance, my confidence improved steadily. I began to trust my assessment process, communicate more clearly, and manage patients more efficiently.

Clinical Safety and Professional Development in Chiropractic
This journey taught me an important lesson: mistakes and uncertainties are part of the learning process.

There will be moments when things do not go as planned and when self-doubt creeps in.
What matters most is maintaining strong clinical fundamentals. As long as we take a thorough history, remain vigilant for red flags, and adhere strictly to safety principles, we can continue to provide responsible and effective care.
This mindset helped me navigate challenging moments during the mission.

Making an Impact Through Healthcare Volunteering
While I recognise that I still have much to learn, this experience has helped me realise that I am capable of making a meaningful difference in patients’ lives.
Hands for Vitality was not only an opportunity to serve, but also a valuable step in learning to trust my training and professional growth.
I have absolutely no regrets about joining this mission. I sincerely hope that the care I provided has made a positive and lasting impact on the individuals we served.
This experience will continue to motivate me as I progress in my chiropractic journey.
