MSc in Molecular Medicine: Navigating a Successful Journey through Open and Distance Learning

28 May 2024

In the landscape of higher education, the emergence of online learning has transformed the way individuals pursue academic endeavours. My educational journey began with a degree in Biomedical Science (Hons). After graduating with my degree, I worked as a scientist in the cytogenetics field, during which my passion for molecular genetics and cancer research flourished. Motivated by this passion, I decided to further my education by pursuing a master’s degree.

After a thorough search, I came across the Master of Science in Molecular Medicine (MMM) programme offered at IMU University via open and distance learning (ODL) mode. This felt like the perfect fit, as it allowed me to balance my work and study life simultaneously—a true icing on the cake. However, I was well aware that navigating the dual responsibilities of pursuing a master’s degree while meeting the demands of work would be a significant challenge, requiring meticulous planning, effective time management, and a steadfast commitment.

My Life as an Open and Distance Learning Student

As a part-time ODL student, I embarked on a journey filled with new experiences, challenges, and invaluable lessons. First and foremost, online learning demanded a paradigm shift in my approach to learning. Unlike traditional brick-and-mortar institution learning like my bachelor’s degree, online learning requires self-discipline, meticulous time management skills and prioritisation.

Despite the flexibility it offered, I had to allocate time for lectures and assignments to ensure I met all deadlines, thereby fostering a stronger sense of accountability and responsibility. Moreover, engaging in interactive discussions and presentations via the Microsoft Teams and ODL platform tools allowed me to communicate with students from diverse backgrounds, enriching my learning experience. I have also been able to master new technology tools and adapt to the emerging pedagogical approaches in the digital era.

Additionally, I must acknowledge the importance of maintaining an open communication with key figures such as the MMM Programme Director, Dr Liew Yun Khoon (Dr Louis), my supervisors, lecturers, and all academic staff. Their support and guidance enabled me to seek assistance when needed, alleviating undue stress, and fostering a harmonious balance between my studies and work life.

Research Project

The most challenging aspect of my master’s degree was my research project where I had to be physically present to conduct lab experiments such as cell culture, qRT-PCR and in vitro assays. Coming from a background in cytogenetics, I was exhilarated by the opportunity to acquire molecular skills and delve into the realm of bioinformatics, which were entirely new to me. Data analysis, comprehension and writing a dissertation were certainly uphill tasks but the unwavering support and mentorship from my main supervisor, A/Prof Dr Lim Chooi Ling and co-supervisor, A/Prof Dr Felicia Chung Fei Lei (Sunway University) made this endeavour possible. They imparted their expertise, knowledge, and provided me with the necessary resources to successfully complete my research project.

Additionally, I also had the privilege to conduct a few experiments at AGTC Genomics. Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Prof Dr Leong Chee Onn and everyone at AGTC Genomics for their technical support and contribution which also played a pivotal role in the success of my research endeavours.

An Invaluable Experience

Conclusively, my journey through an ODL master’s degree programme with a First Class Honours has been a multifaceted tapestry characterised by experiences, emotions, challenges, and personal growth. This achievement represents more than just my individual success; it is a collective celebration of mentors who provided guidance and inspiration, peers who offered camaraderie and collaboration, and loved ones who stood by me with unwavering belief.

Thank you, IMU, for this invaluable experience. Each lesson learned has left an enduring impression on my educational journey, opening doors to new opportunities and limitless possibilities for the future. I eagerly anticipate embarking on the next chapter of my academic and professional pursuits.
