My Enlightening Journey of Service and Self-Discovery

If I could describe this trip (a two-week international mobility and community outreach mission in the Philippines) in one word, it would be enlightening — even though I fell sick during the journey.

Despite not feeling my best physically at times, the experience in the Philippines turned out to be one of the most meaningful chapters of my student life. I had the opportunity to meet people from different walks of life and provide chiropractic care to individuals who rarely have access to such services. Being part of this mission made me feel incredibly fortunate.

One of the most memorable aspects of the trip was seeing patients improve under our care. Watching someone walk away feeling lighter or more comfortable reminded me that what we learn in class truly matters. It was fulfilling to know that even as a student, I could contribute positively to someone’s wellbeing.

What touched me deeply was how caring the patients were towards us. Some of them were concerned that we might be too tired and encouraged us to take care of ourselves. Their kindness and consideration, despite their own challenges, left a strong impression on me. It reminded me that compassion in healthcare is mutual — we care for patients, but patients also care for us.

Before the trip, I was worried that language might be a barrier. However, I was pleasantly surprised that many people in the Philippines speak English well. This allowed us to communicate more smoothly than expected. Through these conversations, my confidence in explaining conditions and treatment plans improved significantly. I learned how to communicate more clearly and connect with people beyond cultural differences.

Overall, this journey strengthened my clinical skills, improved my communication abilities, and most importantly, taught me to appreciate opportunities that allow us to serve others. Even falling sick became part of the lesson — a reminder to value health, resilience, and teamwork.

Explaining to patient

I am truly grateful to have been part of Hands for Vitality. It was an experience that helped me grow not only as a future chiropractor, but also as a more appreciative and mindful person.
