Navigating Growth and Diversity: My Enriching Internship Experience at IMU

7 Mar 2025

An Unexpected Opportunity

My journey with IMU began in an unexpected yet fortuitous manner. Originally applying for an undergraduate position at the Psychology and Counselling Learning Centre (PCLC) after spotting the vacancy on Jobstreet, my path took a unique turn during my interview. My supervisor, who is also the Head of the Department of Psychology and Counselling, recognised my qualifications from my master’s degree in Counselling from UTM. Seeing the potential for a more fitting challenge, she offered me a role tailored to harness and expand my academic skills in meaningful ways.

A Dual Role: Tutor and Administrator

In my role as a tutor under the Department of Psychology and Counselling, I led practical classes for the master’s course “MCP304 Cultural Diversity, Ethics, and Professionalism,” where I facilitated discussions and provided feedback on research proposals, drawing on my qualitative research experience. This tutoring role was a delicate balance of maintaining professionalism while being approachable, as I navigated the fine line between being a mentor and a peer to students close to my age.

Admiring Efficiency and Leadership in Tutoring

During my time in IMU, I quickly realised the importance of working efficiently while maintaining quality. I reminded myself to keep a fast pace while ensuring thoroughness in my work. This shift in focus was partly inspired by observing my supervisor’s ability to manage her numerous responsibilities with remarkable efficiency. Watching her handle multiple tasks without losing focus taught me a valuable lesson: time is precious, and maintaining concentration is key. It became clear to me that true efficiency is not about rushing through tasks, but about staying disciplined, managing time well, and minimising distractions. These insights have helped me refine my approach to work, prioritise tasks effectively, and balance speed with quality. These are the skills I will carry forward in my professional journey.

Team Dynamics and Workplace Culture at MHC

As an intern administrator at the newly named Mind Health Centre, formerly PCLC, I witnessed and contributed to the transition and rebranding efforts. The camaraderie and supportive nature of our team were evident, as we often captured our milestones through photos, creating a vibrant visual record of our collective journey.

After relocating and setting up the new centre, our clinical coodinator’s gesture of rewarding our hard work with Hokkaido Cheese Tarts not only lifted our spirits but also reinforced the sense of appreciation and visibility within our team. The atmosphere at MHC is characterised by mutual support and flexibility, with team members seamlessly taking over each other’s responsibilities when needed, fostering a harmonious environment devoid of office politics.

The Joy of Making an Impact

Being involved in the setup of the new Mind Health Centre, from unpacking boxes to organising spaces, was both chaotic and immensely satisfying. It was fulfilling to see our collective efforts materialise into a functional and welcoming environment ready to serve the community. Perhaps the most gratifying aspect of my internship was receiving both verbal and written appreciation from my students. Their remarks, acknowledging my efforts and the inspiration they drew from my dedication, were profoundly rewarding. These expressions of gratitude validated my commitment to not only my professional duties but also to being a role model.

Valuable Insights from Experienced Mentors

Before my internship concluded, I had the privilege of engaging in conversations with various lecturers from the Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) and Master of Counselling (MOC) programmes. The diverse perspectives and expert advice they offered were immensely beneficial, helping me realize that feeling confused and out of my comfort zone is a normal part of growth at this stage. These interactions provided me with the encouragement and clarity needed to advance my career in mental health. I am deeply grateful for their generous sharing of insights, which are usually reserved for paid supervision.

Reflecting on a Formative Experience

As my internship at IMU draws to a close, I reflect on the profound growth I’ve experienced. This period has not only sharpened my professional skills but also broadened my perspectives and deepened my commitment to psychology and counseling. The relationships formed and the challenges overcome have prepared me to forge a path that aligns closely with my values and career aspirations.

Looking ahead, I am excited to apply the insights gained and the lessons learned to make a meaningful impact in the field. This internship was more than an educational endeavor; it was a transformative journey that has equipped me to contribute effectively to the community and the broader field of mental health.
