Newell Tan’s Chiropractic Career Journey

20 Aug 2024

From time to time, we feature some of our distinguished alumni. This time, we had the pleasure of catching up with Newell Tan, a chiropractic graduate, to interview him about his career as a chiropractor.

What inspired you to become a chiropractor?

I have always had the passion for helping others improve their health and well-being  through natural and holistic approaches to healing as it allows me to engage directly with people and offer a comprehensive approach to healthcare.

While I initially trained in neuroscience research in Australia, I realised the limitations of traditional healthcare approaches. I wanted to pursue a more personalised method of treatment, which led me to chiropractic care. Additionally, I’ve always been intrigued by the human body’s ability to move and the intricacies of brain function

What is the most memorable experience in your career?

One of the most memorable experiences in my career was witnessing the transformation of a patient who was immobilised and wheelchair-bound due to debilitating pain. This patient was also struggling with many challenges. Through chiropractic treatments, they experienced significant relief and regained mobility, both physically and emotionally. Over time, they became advocates for holistic health, not only for themselves but also for others.

It’s inspiring to see them continuously work towards improving their physical and mental abilities. I recently heard that they even went on a hike up a mountain in Melbourne, which is a testament to their remarkable progress and determination

What advice or tips do you have for students aspiring to become chiropractors?

Students aspiring to become chiropractors need to focus on building a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. They also need to cultivate excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively connect with their patients.

Remember the words of Ronald Reagan, ‘We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” Recognize that while chiropractic care offers significant benefits, it’s not the only solution.

Share your knowledge with humility and openness, acknowledging that no single healthcare approach is superior to others. Always prioritise the interests of your patients, ensuring their well-being is at the forefront of every decision and treatment plan

What are the responsibilities and duties of a chiropractor?

As a chiropractor, our responsibilities include assessing patients’ musculoskeletal health, diagnosing and treating neuromusculoskeletal conditions, developing personalized treatment plans, performing adjustments and manipulations, and providing patient education on maintaining optimal health and wellness – includes preventative measures/interventions.

What are the differences between chiropractic care and traditional Chinese massage therapy?

Both are forms of manual therapy but have different origins, techniques, and philosophies. Chiropractic care focuses on diagnosing and treating neuromusculoskeletal disorders primarily through manual adjustments and manipulations of the spine and joints, emphasizing on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system while traditional Chinese massage therapy, such as Tui Na, emphasizes the manipulation of the body’s energy channels, or meridians, to promote balance and alleviate pain

What abilities, knowledge, and skills are essential for a chiropractor?

These include but not limited to: a strong understanding of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, manual dexterity and precision for performing adjustments, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, empathy (including listening), critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.

We would like to thank Newell for taking time out of his busy schedule for this interview.
