When I was searching for a university to pursue my degree in Psychology, IMU stood out to me for its strong academic reputation, focus on holistic learning, and its flexibility in allowing students to explore various fields beyond clinical work. What particularly drew me in was IMU’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates, with modules that not only focused on theory but also incorporated real-world application through research, projects, and hands-on experiences.
Being a medical and health sciences university, IMU also offered a unique environment where I could understand the intersection between mental health and other healthcare disciplines which was an opportunity I found both rare and valuable.
My time at IMU was incredibly enriching, both academically and personally. The small class sizes encouraged deeper discussions and close connections with lecturers, who were not only knowledgeable but also genuinely kind and supportive throughout our journey. I appreciated how the curriculum pushed us to think critically and apply psychological concepts in diverse settings, from conducting research to working on community outreach projects.
IMU also provided great facilities and student benefits, such as free counselling services, well-equipped study spaces, and a vibrant campus life. Almost every week, there were booths, events, and activities organised by students, creating a lively and engaging environment that encouraged connection and growth.
Beyond academics, I found a sense of belonging through club activities and events like Psychology Day, where I took on leadership roles and built lasting friendships. IMU gave me the space to grow not just as a student, but as a confident individual ready to face the world.
12-week Industrial Attachment
During my final year, an industrial attachment for 12 weeks was needed as part of putting our degree to a close. It was undoubtedly a thrilling experience, stepping into the working world for the first time. I appreciated the fact that we were given the freedom of choosing which pathway we desired to take. It was tough deciding on what kind of industry I would like to tap into, and had landed on the corporate setting after realising my true interest lies in industrial and organisational psychology. So much so that it became my final year thesis topic as well!
From then onwards, I proactively researched firms that were open for internships and I made the bold choice of choosing EY to be my stepping stone as an adult. I was a Learning and Development intern for 3 months and was placed under a project called Milestones, which celebrates the promotion of over 600+ Asean employees and provides training to ease their transition into their new roles. Working under the communications and facilitator management teams specifically, contributed significantly to my learning curve.
Nevertheless, I knew I had so much to learn and have decided to extend my role in EY. And so, I am currently working in the Consulting Learning team as a Learning Deployment Coordinator, where I support the Consulting Department by coordinating and facilitating training sessions. My role involves end-to-end logistics preparation and building connections across teams, giving me valuable insight into the consulting service line and its expectations. Supporting the success of consultants from behind the scenes has given me a unique advantage and a deeper appreciation for the work they do. I would have never thought I would be part of such a well-known service firm in the corporate world, while holding a Psychology degree.
IMU had well-equipped me with the best learning modules that gave their students an opportunity to go beyond the borders of the clinical world, despite being a medical-centric university. Even then, I am appreciative of having the knowledge of both clinical psychology and corporate psychology.
My Future: Anything is Possible
My dream of continuing my master’s in the future is no longer a faraway dream, knowing that I have the credentials for it, thanks to IMU’s outstanding module selection.
Where I am now, I wish to excel in the corporate world and bridge the gap between business needs and psychological knowledge, proving to IMU students that anything is possible.
Advice to Future Students
To future students, my advice is to take full advantage of the flexibility and opportunities IMU offers. Don’t limit yourself to one path and be bold in exploring your interests, even if they fall outside traditional expectations. With the strong foundation IMU provides, you will find yourself capable of thriving in any industry you choose.
