Choosing a career path is often a daunting journey, especially right out of high school. As a Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) graduate, I had little idea of what direction to pursue. I knew I wanted to make a positive impact on the community, particularly in healthcare, but the specific path was still unclear.
When I attended IMU’s Open Day, it marked a turning point. The event opened my eyes to the diverse courses available, and I was able to gain guidance on what might align with my interests.
Among all the courses, dietetics stood out. My love for food initially sparked my curiosity, but it was the science behind food, nutrition, and its impact on health that truly captivated me. I wanted to delve into how dietary choices influence well-being, manage health conditions, and ultimately, promote a healthier lifestyle in communities. IMU offered the unique blend of knowledge, support, and practical experience I was looking for to turn my passion into a career.
My IMU Experience
Reflecting on my past 4 years at IMU, I can wholeheartedly say that the journey has been incredibly rewarding. IMU’s dedicated faculty and strong emphasis on hands-on learning created an environment that nurtured both personal and professional growth. One of the most memorable—and transformative—periods for me was the dietetics practicum in our fourth year.
This practicum took us through diverse dietetics settings, including food service, clinical, and community environments. Transitioning from textbooks to real-life practice was challenging yet immensely fulfilling. Each setting brought its own unique learning experiences—from managing meal planning in food service to developing personalised nutrition plans in clinical settings, and engaging with communities to promote healthier lifestyles.
I still remember the nervous excitement of meeting my first patient, feeling the weight of responsibility yet motivated to make a difference. It was both humbling and inspiring to witness firsthand the role of dietetics in improving lives. This experience solidified my commitment to the field and provided a glimpse into the impact I could have as a future dietitian.
What’s Next?
Right now, I am actively searching for job opportunities as a dietitian and am open to working in various settings—whether clinical, food service, or community-based. I view this as an ongoing learning journey, and I’m committed to staying updated with the latest trends and advancements in dietetics and nutrition.
In the future, my goal is to become a dedicated and inspiring dietitian, continually enhancing my skills to provide the best support possible to my clients. I want to guide individuals in making sustainable improvements to their diets and lifestyles, helping communities adopt healthier eating habits and live healthier lives. This vision motivates me to create meaningful change, empowering individuals to lead healthier lives, one step at a time.
Advice for Future Dietetics Students
Don’t be afraid to take on challenges or make mistakes. Each experience, whether a success or a setback, is an opportunity to learn and grow. Never hold back from improving yourself and pushing beyond your comfort zone. The journey will have its ups and downs, but stay resilient and keep moving forward. Remember, persistence is key. Enjoy the process, embrace every moment, and make the most of the opportunities that come your way. Believe in yourself, and don’t give up!
