IMU chiropractic student Emily Chai Yu Hern reflects on her Hands for Vitality mission in the Philippines, providing care and health education to underserved communities.
An Unforgettable and Fulfilling Experience
My 14-day chiropractic mission in the Philippines was truly an unforgettable and fulfilling experience.
Throughout the programme, our team completed nine outreach visits to provide free spinal screenings, adjustments, and health education to local communities.
Despite the language and cultural differences, the warmth and hospitality of the people made us feel genuinely welcomed.
It was deeply inspiring to serve individuals with limited access to healthcare, many of whom had been living with chronic pain for years. Their resilience and trust reminded me of the real purpose behind what we do.

Meaningful Moments
One of the most meaningful moments was seeing the smiles on patients’ faces and witnessing their immediate relief following care.
These simple yet powerful responses reaffirmed why I chose to pursue chiropractic.
They reminded me that even small improvements in comfort and mobility can make a significant difference in someone’s daily life.
Building Confidence in Serving Communities
This mission not only strengthened my clinical skills but also built my confidence in serving communities in need.
Working in unfamiliar and resource-limited environments challenged me to adapt, communicate more effectively, and remain patient-centred at all times.
Looking Ahead
I return from this journey with a deeper sense of empathy and renewed motivation to grow into a chiropractor who serves with both competence and compassion. Hands for Vitality has been a meaningful milestone that will continue to shape my professional journey in the years ahead.
