Where It All Began: Alex Lee Wei Yan’s Journey of Growth at IMU

19 Nov 2025

Celebrating excellence! Alex Lee Wei Yan (3rd from right), a MSc in Molecular Medicine graduate, shares his inspiring journey.

Choosing to study Molecular Medicine at IMU was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My cousin, an IMU MBBS graduate, greatly inspired and encouraged me to pursue my studies at this esteemed university. With its strong academic reputation, excellent faculty, and comprehensive curriculum, IMU has significantly enhanced my knowledge and prepared me for a professional career in the medical and health sciences field.

My experience at IMU was a blend of challenges and joy. The coursework was demanding, yet it taught me invaluable lessons in resilience and discipline. I still vividly remember the feedback I received on my first assignment—it was filled with detailed corrections and insightful comments from Prof Dr Tan Eng Lai. His dedication and meticulous guidance in teaching me how to craft a proper research article greatly enhanced my academic writing skills and deepened my appreciation for scholarly work.

At the same time, I had the privilege of being mentored by another inspiring lecturer, Dr Lim Lay Cheng, who served as my research project supervisor. She demonstrated exceptional professionalism, expertise, and dedication throughout my research journey. Dr Lim meticulously reviewed my thesis each time, guiding me to understand the importance of clarity, precision, and attention to detail in scientific writing.

What I Am Doing Now?

Currently, I am working as a pharmaceutical production executive, applying the knowledge and experience I gained from IMU. These valuable experiences have allowed me to understand how each drug is developed and manufactured. After gaining a period of industrial exposure, the knowledge I acquired at IMU has further deepened my understanding of pharmaceutical regulatory standards and their critical role in ensuring product quality and patient safety.

Looking ahead, I aspire to further my expertise and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of my field, particularly through greater involvement in Research and Development (R&D) or Innovations and Developments (I&D). I hope to participate in projects that drive scientific discovery, enhance drug formulation processes, and ultimately improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare products.

Advice to Future Students

Lastly, my advice to future students is to stay dedicated, manage their time wisely, and take every opportunity to participate in industrial attachments whenever possible. Such experiences allow you to connect academic knowledge with real-world industry practices and better understand market needs. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards—both personal and professional—are truly worthwhile.
