Rumah Victory Elderly Home

In year 2013 we have successfully completed 3 visits, This proposed visit will focus on diabetes intervention to fulfill the need of old folks. Diabetes intervention conducted last year report (diabetes intervention) identified that out of 50 participants 10 old folks were suffered from Type 2 Diabetes and 6 were at risk of diabetes. Since the cardiovascular events are common with diabetes, we have expanded this visit to check cholesterol as well. In 24th January 2015, a community service program at the Rumah Victory Elderly Home had been organized. Health screening session for the residents of the home was conducted to provide a comprehensive outlook of their current state of health. The health screening session includes body mass index (BMI) measurement, blood pressure (BP) measurement, fasting blood glucose (FBS) measurement, eyesight checking, oral hygiene checking and health consultation from general practitioner. For this upcoming IMU Cares visit, we aim to perform a follow-up on their health status and devise the appropriate action plans based on the outcomes of the assessment of their health conditions.

Basic health screening has been done during the 2nd visit on 12 March 2016. We have done various activities like Random blood glucose, total cholesterol, High-density lipoprotein (HDL), Triacylglycerol (TG), Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), Blood pressure measurement. Health consultation also provided based on the screening data. We have screened 36 residents and health conditions of old folks have been identified accordingly. Residents with hyperglycaemia and hypertension have been identified and those (5 people) who required immediate intervention are proposed to be referred to the IMU Healthcare Clinic. These old folks came to IMU clinic 2 times for follow up and currently they are under medication.

We have also done the project on medication management. We have labelled all the medications and also given educational briefing to care takers on medication management.

Recently, we have done the basic health screening of measuring blood glucose and blood pressure for 40 residents in 2017. All people’s blood glucose and blood pressure values were within the normal range and most of them were compliant to their medication. Dr. Tan Ming Yeong, our IMU Healthcare nurse specialised in diabetes education, played a significant role in improving the blood glucose levels of the elderly residents with diabetes. Besides the basic health screening, we have also involved in the housekeeping, entertainment of elderly by engaging them in singing old Chinese songs and games like Chinese chess. Engaging the old folks in origami and decorating the walls of their home. On 7 March 2018, we carried out the the educational talk on personal hygiene.
