Unlocking Insights in Transcriptomics

14 Feb 2025

The Division of Applied Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology, School of Health Sciences, in collaboration with Codon Genomics (CoGen), successfully hosted a three-day Transcriptomics Workshop: From Experimental Design to Downstream Analysis and Insights Generation from 26 to 28 November 2024.

This hands-on workshop aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills in transcriptomics, including experimental design, workflow approaches, bioinformatics software applications for RNA-Seq data analysis, and the interpretation and annotation of functional data. The event attracted 19 participants, comprising of postgraduate students, researchers and industry delegates from Malaysia and Singapore.

The workshop was further distinguished by its accreditation, earning 20 CPD points from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and 15 CPD points from myCPD.

Participants benefited from the expertise of an esteemed lineup of lead speakers and instructors, including Prof Dr Hoh Boon Peng (IMU), Ts Dr Yeannie Yap Hui Yeng (IMU), AP Dr Goh Hoe Han (UKM), Dr Lee Wei Kang (CoGen), and Ts Dr James Liew Kok Jun (CoGen).

Their insightful lectures and hands-on guidance provided participants with practical skills and valuable perspectives on transcriptomics analysis, including the sharing on how artificial intelligence and machine learning connecting multi-omics information in high-value biological research.

The hands-on modules include introduction to FASTQ format and raw data cleaning, transcriptome assembly, reads mapping and expression profiling, differential expression analysis and enrichment analysis, variant calling and annotation, generation of transcriptome heatmap, principal component analysis, DEGs Volcano and enrichment plots.

Besides, participants also had the opportunity to attend one-to-one genomic clinic consultation session with the CoGen bioinformaticians during the workshop to discuss their current research questions and problems.  In addition, participants are offered a 1-month post-workshop consultation on data analysis and annotation.

Participants provided excellent feedback on the workshop, particularly appreciating the event organisation, speaker expertise, and interactive sessions.

Feedback from Participants

“Very good, all trainers are very patient, thank you very much” – Leong Yong Qi

“Very useful and informative” – Dr Phyu Synn Oo

“Overall great workshop. Very insightful.” — Dr Lim Lay Cheng

“Good. It has helped me to understand the data processing steps, as I am only experienced in data analysis previously. With the scripts provided, I can run and visualise my data with better features or tools as well. The programme installers are useful.” – Dr Lim Wui Zhuan

The Division extends its gratitude to the participants for their enthusiastic engagement throughout the workshop, which contributed significantly to its success. A special acknowledgement goes to the organising committee for their meticulous planning and seamless execution of the event. Additionally, we thank Prof Ivan Hoh, Founder and CEO of Codon Genomics, for his unwavering support and collaboration, which made this workshop possible.

Looking ahead, the Division is excited to explore further opportunities for collaboration with Codon Genomics, particularly in advancing research and fostering partnerships in biomedical sciences and biotechnology.
