IMU Centre for Education (ICE)

The International Medical University Centre for Education (ICE) was established in 1999 as the Medical Education Unit (MEU). The centre was established primarily to provide advice and support for the pedagogical and quality aspects of all academic programs at the university.

ICE provides faculty training, encourages and facilitates innovative approaches in learning–teaching activities, collects data for academic quality assurance, and conducts research in medical and health professional education.

ICE also plays a major role in organizing international conferences annually to provide a platform for sharing, learning and networking of health professions in education. Together with the strong collaboration with partner medical schools, these conferences have grown the past 21 years in quality and excellence. Among the highlights of these conferences are the research papers, workshops and recognition for excellence in learning and teaching through The Ron Harden Award for Innovation in Medical Education.

The IMU Centre of Education (ICE ) has been awarded the AMEE ASPIRE Certificate of Merit for excellence in Faculty Development!  The award was presented during AMEE Conference 2022 at Lyon, France on 28th August 2022. The application was submitted by the team comprising of Prof Dr Vishna Devi Nadarajah, Dr Norul Hidayah, Prof Dr Er Hui Meng, Assoc Prof Dr. Wong Pei Se and Ms Siti Suriani.

The review was made based on five main criteria:- Goals and Design of Programme, Scope of Programme Offerings, Programme Resources and Support, Programme Evaluation, and Scholarship. In IMU, the faculty development programme is long-standing, extensive, well-resourced, and has evolved over time to meet changing needs. The programme proved agile in responding to the demands made of health professions education by the COVID-19 pandemic. The programme has also resulted in innovation in teaching, learning, and assessment practice as well as scholarship on education and faculty development.

ICE has a critical and central role in FD programme (FDP) development, implementation, and evaluation of FDP in IMU. The FDP has been developed and adapted continuously to align with the vision and mission of the institution and to also adapt to current disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemics.  The unit has developed excellent resources to guide a focus on teaching from the Fac-CAT, the IDP, planning templates, journal club guide, resources for online teaching etc. Therefore, the FD team is to be commended for the scope of activity that has been sustained over many years. Moreover, IMU makes an important contribution as a host to an ongoing education conference internationally and regionally to gather health professional educators to develop networks, exchange ideas and experiences, and showcase innovations in education.

Additionally, ICE continues to engage faculty members and increase the pool of faculty developers and resources to support the unit. With more scholarship in teaching and learning and faculty development, ICE can continue to provide evidence-based FDP in IMU. Strong institutional support in FD, excellent standards of procedures around FD programme development and implementation, and investment in the capacity of faculty developers will ensure continuous offerings of quality FDP in IMU to support the professional and personal development of faculty members.

Being recognized for the AMEE ASPIRE Certificate of Merit in Faculty Development will highlight IMU nationally and internationally in the area of faculty development and IMU can clearly demonstrate to the students, staff, and other stakeholders that the quest for excellence in education, including faculty development, is part of school’s vision and mission.
