"When We Talk About Our Feelings, They Become Less Overwhelming, Less Upsetting, And Less Scary." - Fred Rogers
University life can be compared to starting a whole new chapter of life. This journey’s main twists and turns are centred around self-discovery and self-reliance while you are learning to cope with being away from home, making new friends, balancing personal time, understanding, and meeting the demands of your course. From time to time, while you are busying coping with these adjustments you may sometimes feel overwhelmed.
Our team of mental health professionals which are the counsellors and clinical psychologists are ready to journey along with you by providing the following services: individual/group counselling, educational wellbeing, career guidance, workshop and training, referral, and crisis interventation.
One on One Session
Humans are naturally social creatures, so talking and communicating with others is one of the primary methods we have for shifting through our thoughts. Unfortunately, we do not always feel comfortable talking to the people in our lives. When we are feeling overwhelmed, our emotions, worries and stresses can seem like too much to unload on a friend or a family member. That is where individual counselling is helpful in creating a safe space to explore your concerns objectively, offering a comforting word, encouraging self-discovery and the use of adaptive coping skills to help you improve the quality of your life.
Group Session
Group counselling can act as a strong support network for students to feel a greater sense of connection to others and normalises what they are going through. It provides a valuable space for students to share information about themselves, gain insight into their own thoughts and behaviours as well as learn helpful ways to give and receive support besides getting feedback from others. Some of our group counselling topics include stress management, communication skills, exploring relationship, managing anxiety and enhancing coping skills.
The IMU Student Counselling Services (SCS) works within the ethical framework for good practice in accordance with the Malaysia Counsellor Act 1998 (580 Act).
Our team of mental health professionals are committed to work together to provide professional counselling services to the students adhering to the Counsellors Code of Ethics as set by “Lembaga Kaunselor” (Malaysian Board of Counsellors) and the MSCP Ethical Code (2015) for registered clinical psychologists, as set by Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychologists.

Fact: Everyone has difficulties at some point in their lives. Being able to ask for help is a sign of maturity, humility, and inner strength.
Fact: Counsellors do not provide clinical diagnostic reports or prescribe medication. Their focus is to collaborate with the clients to identify, address, and work through their concerns and needs.
Fact: Counselling / therapy is not a “quick fix” cure to your problems. The counsellor is there to help you explore your feelings, thoughts, and concerns, to examine your options, and to assist you in achieving the goals you set.
Fact: Counsellors and psychologists are trained to be sensitive to and respectful of individual differences, including the specific concerns of students with regard to gender, racial/ethnic, cultural, religious, age, sexual preference/orientation, and socioeconomic issues.
