Clinical psychology represents a specialised field dedicated to evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental health disorders and emotional disturbances. This comprehensive programme is designed to nurture clinical psychologists equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies in both clinical practice and research. Students have the opportunity to collaborate closely with various healthcare professionals to co-manage cases and develop intervention plans tailored to each patient’s needs, ultimately contributing to the alleviation of hidden internal struggles within the community.

To enhance students’ competence in providing collaborative care to clients, students will work closely with different healthcare professionals in a multidisciplinary setting to co-manage cases and co-construct intervention plans.

Comprehensive Curriculum

The curriculum is tailored in a comprehensive manner which prepares students to be competent in performing psychological assessment, diagnosis and various psychological intervention (for example, individual, couples and family therapy) catered to a population of diverse gender, age, cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic background.

Serving the Community

To enhance the learning experience, students will be participating in IMU Cares Community projects related to mental health activities such as counselling, psychoeducation, assessments and other activities to promote mental wellness.

Platform to Practise

To enhance the practical learning experience, students will have the opportunity to practise in the IMU Psychology and Learning Centre and established centres with close supervision by qualified clinical psychologists and other relevant mental health professionals. This will provide students with an up-close experience to help clients in an integrated psychology and healthcare setting.

Applicants are required to have obtained:

A Bachelor’s Degree of at least 3 years’ duration in Psychology or its equivalent with minimum CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00; Note: A Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology not meeting CGPA of 2.75 (but not lower than 2.5) may be considered subject to rigorous internal assessment by an independent review panel
Shortlisted applicants who meet the entry requirement will undergo an interview session. Shortlisted applicants must pass the interview carried out by members of the selection committee
Students who have any relevant work experience would have an added advantage

International students who graduated from any Malaysian or other institutions where the curriculum is delivered in English.

Assesment

The IMU Master of Clinical Psychology programme employs both continuous and final assessments in assessing students. Majority of the modules employ continuous assessment with a variety of assessment methods such as practical skills, reflective writing, critical review report, research proposal, case study analysis, self-assessment, etc. As for the final assessment, students will go through an examination which focuses on evaluating students' application of theoretical knowledge and ability to think critically.

All IMU Alumni who are self-funding their postgraduate studies and meet the eligibility criteria will be eligible for a bursary of 15%.
Application fee is payable upon submission of application.

The Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) only takes in applicants with a Bachelor’s in Psychology background. The MCP programme is designed to train future clinical psychologists with expertise in the areas of assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. The Master of Counselling (MOC) programme on the other hand is designed to train future licensed professional counsellors with expertise in helping clients address social, emotional, relational issues or other stressors in their lives. Both professionals provide mental health service to individuals from a diverse background. The main difference is that clinical psychologists tend to work with individuals with mental health disorders.

The mode of study for this programme is the conventional mode. Students will be expected to attend face to face classes for all the designated face to face sessions. A fraction of the classes will be online. The exact breakdown of the mode of classes will be briefed during the orientation week. This is a 60 credit hours programme:

15 out of 60 credits (25%) à practicum modules (clinical training)
12 out of 60 credits (20%) à research modules
27 out of 60 credits (45%) à compulsory modules (taught modules)
6 out of 60 credits (10%) à elective modules (taught modules)

Some modules in the programme will involve case studies as part of its continuous assessment. Students may also join in the Department’s annual field visits, as and when, they are organised.

The practicum module will run in 3 parts (Practicum 1, 2, 3)
Each part will be for 14 weeks. It will be done concurrently with taught modules.
Practicum 1 will be done internally at IMU’s Psychology and Counselling Learning Centre (PCLC) for the full 14 weeks.
Practicum 2 and 3 will be done at external sites. Students may rotate across several sites within these 2 semesters.
For external practicum, students may indicate their site preference. The final assignment of practicum sites will be based on goodness of fit (eg: matching supervisor’s area of expertise or population served with student’s learning needs or interest)

For the internal practicum, IMU has its own Psychology and Counselling Learning Centre (PCLC) that has been set up primarily for our Master of Clinical Psychology trainees’ clinical practice and supervision. For the external practicum, the programme will have a list of secured placement sites to apply to through IMU’s collaborations with teaching hospitals which IMU SOM has established via MOUs with community partners, other NGOs or private practices to enable students’ fulfilment of practicum hours. The list will be made available to the students before their practicum semester commences.
