IMU’s MSc in Public Health Programme Empowers Students Through Real-World Experience and Multidisciplinary Learning

The world is changing at a faster pace than ever before. Human lifestyles have been greatly impacted by improved living conditions and the changing economy. Nonetheless, the drawbacks brought about by environmental changes are significant.

As health challenges intensify, public health plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between population perspectives and medical professionals. This role extends beyond traditional preventive measures and regulations.

Public health specialists are needed now more than ever as the world faces new diseases and pandemics that significantly impact the economy, as well as the mental and physical health of populations worldwide.

With this in mind, IMU University offers a MSc in Public Health, which provides students from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity to master the art of public health through the application of real-world scenarios by engaging in community projects, field experience, and the analysis of prevailing health situations. The application of a multidisciplinary approach in problem-solving enables students to adapt to real-world scenarios, develop collaborative skills essential for effective leadership, create innovative solutions, and nurture empathy and cultural sensitivity, among other valuable skills.

We aim to graduate leaders at national and international levels who will contribute to the well-being of populations and lead the public health fraternity.

When I first enrolled in the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) programme, I was often asked, “Why study public health?” The answer is simple: public health is vital for promoting wellness, preventing disease, and empowering individuals to manage their health and disabilities. This field uniquely combines theoretical knowledge with practical action, drawing on diverse disciplines and perspectives to uncover the root causes of health issues and develop innovative, sustainable solutions that enhance the quality of life for everyone.

As a full-time medical officer with an interest in public health and research, I have found the MSPH programme at IMU University to be highly accommodating. The programme is available in both conventional and open and distance learning (ODL) formats, with options for full-time and part-time study. This flexibility allowed me to balance my professional responsibilities with my educational goals. The programme not only deepens my public health knowledge but also cultivates independence and active learning skills. Constructive feedback from lecturers has been instrumental in helping me identify areas for improvement.

One of the highlights of the programme is the dissertation module, where we design and conduct our own research projects. Despite the challenges, the guidance from my supervisor was invaluable, and the opportunity to present the findings of my research at a conference made the experience even more rewarding.

However, the journey has not been without its challenges. These challenges have taught me the value of time management and efficiency—skills that are beneficial both academically and professionally.

In summary, I highly recommend this programme to anyone looking to advance their skills. Although it is demanding, the experience is profoundly rewarding and well worth the effort.

As a medical doctor specialising in research and a mother, balancing my professional and personal responsibilities has always been a delicate act. My journey in IMU’s Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) programme through distance learning was an enriching experience that not only honed my skills but also shaped my career in public health.

The MSPH programme was comprehensive and dynamic, offering a curriculum that provided me with in-depth knowledge and practical skills essential for tackling complex public health issues. The flexibility of the distance learning mode was particularly beneficial, allowing me to manage my role as a researcher and a mother while pursuing my academic goals. This adaptability enabled me to learn at my own pace, ensuring that I could fully engage with the programme’s content without compromising my professional duties or time with my son. The programme’s multidisciplinary approach emphasised the interconnectedness of various factors affecting public health, broadening my understanding and enabling me to address health challenges from multiple perspectives.

The journey was not without its challenges. Balancing coursework, research projects, medical duties, and motherhood demanded excellent time management skills and unwavering dedication. There were moments of doubt and exhaustion, but the support from my lecturers, peers, and the university’s online resources played a pivotal role in keeping me motivated. The online forums and discussions provided a sense of community and belonging, making the distance learning experience more connected and interactive.

The guidance and mentorship from faculty members, especially my supervisor, A/Prof Dr Aqil, were instrumental in shaping my research interests and refining my career goals within public health. Their expertise and encouragement helped me overcome obstacles and stay focused on my objectives.

The MSPH programme was a transformative journey that equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue a career in public health. The programme has not only shaped my professional trajectory but also instilled in me a lifelong commitment to improving health outcomes for communities. Balancing my roles as a researcher, a doctor, and a mother, the programme has truly been a catalyst for my personal and professional growth.

In conclusion, the distance learning MSPH programme was a demanding yet fulfilling journey that has significantly contributed to my development as a public health professional and as a person. I am grateful for the opportunities it provided and the profound impact it has had on my career and life.
