IMU Chiropractic Graduate Ian Chong Joins FICS Delegation as Research Assistant at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu

Ian Chong Zen Haw, an alumnus of IMU’s Chiropractic Programme who graduated on 28 June 2024 and holder of the International Certificate in Sports Chiropractic (ICSC), was recently selected as a Research Assistant at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China. Chosen from 44 applicants worldwide, Chong joined the Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS) delegation, supporting both research and athlete care at one of the world’s largest multi-sport events.

Reflecting on the appointment, Ian Chong shared that the opportunity was both inspiring and motivating:

“I have always wanted to contribute to sports chiropractic beyond the treatment room, and this role gave me the chance to combine research with hands-on exposure at the highest level of sport. When I found out that I had been selected from 44 applicants, I felt incredibly humbled. It was a mix of pride, gratitude, and motivation.”

Throughout the Games, Ian Chong worked closely with the FICS research team to document and organise treatment data provided by sports chiropractors across multiple venues. His proficiency in Mandarin also proved invaluable as he served as a translator between international colleagues, local staff, and athletes.

“The most challenging part was capturing data quickly but accurately amidst the pace of competition. The most rewarding part was knowing this data will contribute to future publications and strengthen the evidence base for sports chiropractic worldwide,” Ian Chong explained.

One case that stood out occurred during the speed climbing event, when Ian Chong witnessed an experienced Chinese sports chiropractor treat an athlete suffering from severe shoulder pain. The intervention allowed the athlete to finish third in the competition.

“Watching her reaction, her relief, and her joy was unforgettable. It reminded me why I love this field—seeing athletes overcome barriers and achieve their dreams with the help of chiropractic care,” Ian Chong recalled.

Working alongside sports chiropractors from 18 different countries broadened Ian Chong’s perspective on the profession:

“I saw the universality of sports chiropractic. Despite differences in approaches, everyone shared the same mission—helping athletes perform at their best. It reinforced the importance of collaboration and adaptability in elite sports.”

This international exposure has further motivated Ian Chong to advance the role of sports chiropractic in athlete care, particularly in Singapore and Malaysia.

“Since I was 15, my dream has been to be part of a national team or football club. This experience made me believe it’s possible. I also now see how vital research is for advancing our profession, and I want to continue contributing both clinically and academically.”

Looking back, Ian Chong shared that the most meaningful aspect of the experience was personal growth:

“I used to doubt if I could contribute at an international level. After working alongside some of the best sports chiropractors in the world, I gained a sense of pride and confidence that I had not felt before.”

He also hopes that future international events will introduce more structured mentorship for young chiropractors and research assistants, strengthening the bridge between clinical practice and research.
